CERN Starts To AWAKE’n As New Experiment Ramps Up Towards 1000x Acceleration

CERN have successfully fired a beam of protons through their new unique experiment called AWAKE (the Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment). This is a facility at CERN and houses what will be a unique linear plasma accelerator. Its different from other plasma accelerators in that instead of the typical laser being used to generate the waves, CERN will be using protons coming from within the main ring of the LHC. This linear device has the potential to accelerate particle 1000x faster than the electromagnetic/radio frequency technique adopted in the large ring configurations.

IMPORTANT! THERE IS NO PLASMA IN THE AWAKE MACHINE YET, THIS WAS MERELY A TEST TO MAKE SURE THE SET UP IS FUNCTIONAL SO FAR. ALSO, NO COLLISIONS WILL TAKE PLACE AT THIS FACILITY, ITS A NEW TECHNIQUE TO ACCELERATE PARTICLES. NO STRANGLETS, NO PORTALS ETC WILL BE CREATED IN OR AT THE AWAKE MACHINE!

For the first time a beam of particles has been sent through the pioneering AWAKE experiment signaling the next stage of its commissioning.

This is a test beam, meaning its purpose is to see whether all the parts of the beam line to the experiment are working correctly, and that the magnets are aligning the beam in the correct way.

AWAKE (the Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment) will be the first accelerator of its kind in the world. It is currently under construction, but hopes to test the concept that plasma wakefields driven by a proton beam could accelerate charged particles.

The proton beam has to travel along around 800 m of proton beam line through the 10 m plasma cell, which at the moment is just an empty tube as the plasma is not filled yet, then downstream are several detectors.

“What was really nice is that when we first sent the beam down the proton line to the experiment area, it immediately hit the last detector, verifying our calculations and installation. We can now move onto the next stage of commissioning. There is a strong and wonderful team behind this success,” explains Edda Gschwendtner, the project leader.

The beam comes from CERN’s Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), which just celebrated its fortieth birthday.

“Now we have to do the real work, checking all the details, but it’s great that the very first test showed everything is very consistent. Yes, now we have the beam but we still have to measure and calibrate everything, like the beam instrumentation along the beam line,” says Edda.

AWAKE hopes to start collecting physics data by the end of the year. Next the team will finalise installation of the experiment, the laser and the full plasma cell.

If it works this technology will mean linear colliders in the future could be much shorter, and even table-top accelerators could be possible.

CERN AWAKE EXPERIMENT

This picture shows an integration of the AWAKE experimental components with proposed experiment area. The plasma cell is housed in the downstream end of the CNGS proton beam tunnel. In the early stage of the experiment a 10 m long plasma cell will be installed in the downstream end of the proton tunnel. This area can be modified to house a shorter vapor cell and a helicon and/or discharge source. All other components (laser, electron source etc.) will be installed and shielded to lessen the radiation dosage in the area.

Due to a characteristic property of plasmas called the ‘plasma wavelength’, effective PWA can only occur when length of the driving beam is on the scale of the plasma wavelength. The idea of AWAKE is to use a powerful laser to produce a phenomenon called Self-Modulation Instability (SMI) in the proton beam. This essentially causes the incoming, continuous beam of protons to form microbunches approximately one plasma wavelenth long. A ‘witness’ beam of electrons can then be inserted into the accelerating ‘buckets’ formed by the bunching. The entire beam then enters into a plasma, driving oscillations which accelerate the witness electrons at a phenonmenal gradient, allowing them to gain up to gigavolts of energy.

FUTURE OF ACCELERATORS

Included in the main video update for this article is an extract from an interview I conducted with Anthony Patch towards the end of 2015 in which we discuss the AWAKE experiment and what it means for the future of accelerators.

With the increased acceleration over far shorter distances, this will see the size of particle accelerators dramatically decrease over the coming years. We discuss the pro’s & the con’s of this, taking into consideration the military-industrial-complex and the nefarious intentions they may have.

Tony talks about how we could see accelerators the size of a rifle and mentions direct energy weapons. I have included a documentary on directed energy weapons as this is the future tech the military are persuing, and already have!

We also get into the advantageous medical uses that could come from scaled down particle accelerators. There are other uses for them aswell and i have included the following video as an example.

SHOULD WE BE WORRIED ABOUT AWAKE?

There is nothing overly concerning about this experiment at CERN. There are no collisions taking place in the plasma or near to it, this is purely a technique used to accelerate and increase powers, so dont be listening to anyone telling you this will be the key to ripping open portals to other dimensions, thats just not part of the AWAKE experiment. No strangelets will be produced here due to the fact there are NO COLLISIONS TAKING PLACE IN THE AWAKE MACHINE!

Remember, these protons that were recently fired through the AWAKE device were a test run, and NO PLASMA IS IN THE MACHINE YET!

Later this year AWAKE will be fully functional & there will be the Pb – Pb (lead-lead) collisions that see astronomical energies being created, and that is the time to look out for increased earthquakes and more!
