House Democrats hold National Day of Action for gun control in districts nationwide (VIDEO)

Some 50 Democrats are holding events in over 30 cities across the country Wednesday for a “National Day of Action on Gun Violence Prevention.”

The event comes a week after a marathon 26-hour sit-in protest on the floor of the U.S. House to urge GOP leadership to hold a vote on No Fly/No Buy legislation. With Republican Speaker Paul Ryan sending the body into vacation through the Independence Day weekend, the lawmakers in many cases returned to their districts to assure their local voters they are still in the fight for more regulation on guns.

The Day of Action is focused to urge passage of legislation increasing background checks, banning gun sales to those on terror watch lists which some argue top over 1.5 million often arbitrary names and other measures.

California Democrat Rep. Jerry McNerney released a video message as part of his event, shown above, in which he calls gun violence in the nation unacceptable.

“In the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting by a single individual in our nation’s history, the Republican majority in the House refuses to consider any legislation to reduce gun violence,” says McNerney. “It is now time to show the victims, survivors of gun violence, and the overwhelming majority of the Americans, both Democrats and Republicans, who support commonsense gun laws, that there are leaders are standing up to reduce gun violence and are fighting to actually make some improvements in this important issue.”

On the East Coast, Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark took advantage of the day by having several local mayors sign a resolution to be presented to Speaker Ryan urging a vote on gun proposals.

In Illinois, Reps. Jan Schakowsky and Robin Kelly joined with other Chicago-area lawmakers for a rally.
