The IRS Spends Millions on Guns and Ammo Every Year

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As far as the US government is concerned, a citizen who stockpiles weapons, ammo, and body armor, is considered an extremist of some sort, or perhaps even a burgeoning terrorist. Of course, that standard doesn’t apply to the government itself. If a civilian agency tries to stockpile military gear, it’s business as usual.

That seems to be the case with the Internal Revenue Service. According to a report published by a watchdog group known as OpenTheBooks, the IRS has spent $11 million on weapons, ammo and military equipment since 2006. The amount of money they spend per year has also doubled in that time, from roughly a half a million dollars in 2006, to over $1 million in 2016. They splurged the most on this gear in 2011, when they spent $2 million.

Their weapons budget has drastically increased over the years, despite the fact the number of armed special agents in the IRS has decreased from 3,000 to 2,000 people since 2006. This money is largely being spent on Remington shotguns and Glock pistols, as well as Smith and Wesson M&P15s, which is one of those AR-15 style weapons that the government is always trying to ban for civilians.

The report also found that the IRS isn’t alone when it comes to this weapons buying spree. The EPA, the VA, the FDA, The Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Agriculture, are all arming their law enforcement agents with military style weapons.

Which has to make you wonder, who’s the real extremist terrorist? The American people, or their government?
