Theresa May to be PM after remaining challenger suddenly drops out of Tory race

Following her fait accompli appointment as Tory leader, May will likely be appointed Prime Minister by her fellow Conservative MPs in the House of Commons.

Reports suggest that Leadsom dropped out after sustained personal attacks from the national media and others within her own party. Tim Loughton, Leadsom’s campaign manager, since released a full statement about Leadsom’s decision to quit claiming she was the victim of dirty tricks:

“Throughout our short campaign we have made it clear that we should be relentlessly focussed on the positive case for electing Andrea as Leader without the need to undermine the qualities of her opponents. Despite an onslaught of often very personal attacks from colleagues and journalists we have never deviated from that goal. Colleagues who have chosen to further their own ends by putting smear above respect will no doubt account for their motivations but it is genuinely puzzling to understand who they think they are helping. It is certainly not our Party or our constituents.”

Over the weekend, a number of British mainstream media outlets attacked Leadsom as guilty of “weaponising parenthood” after Leadsom made a passing comment about how her being a parent gave her an advantage over May in terms of relating to families in the UK. According to the Express:

“Mrs Leadsom, a mother of three, sparked a furore after saying in an interview that having children gave her “a tangible stake” in the future of Britain.” She said she thought her rival Theresa May was “really sad” to be childless, adding that although the Home Secretary “possibly has nieces and nephews”, being a parent meant “you have a very real stake in the future of our country. ”

Leadsom went on to accuse The Times of ‘gutter journalism’ for taking her comments out of context.

Most notably, May made a strong statement regarding BREXIT:

“Mrs May said of the referendum result: “Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it,” adding that there would be “no attempt to rejoin [the EU] by the back door”.
