Two teens with prior criminal histories are now facing murder charges after they shot and killed a man who helped pull the SUV they were driving out of a ditch alongside a North Charleston road late Monday night.

A witness, who did not want to be named, told authorities that Deon Antonio Frasier, 17, and Michael Odell Anthony Dupree-Tyler, 19, got the Dodge Durango stuck in a ditch sometime after 11 p.m. and asked 45-year-old Chadwick Garrett for assistance. Garrett offered to use his truck to pull the vehicle out of the ditch for a $20 fee and the teens agreed.

Garrett then retrieved the SUV, but once it was out of the ditch, the teens made no effort to pay the man. When Garrett questioned them about payment, Frasier pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times in the chest. The teens then got back into the SUV and drove away, leaving Garrett to die.

About 20 minutes after the shooting, police received a call from a woman stating that her SUV had been taken by the two teens without permission. But before the vehicle or the suspects were located, the woman called a second time to say the vehicle was returned and the suspects were back at the apartment where they lived, about six miles from where the shooting occurred. However, by that time, Garrett’s body had been found and authorities were searching for the suspects.

Soon thereafter, police surrounded the apartment and, following a brief standoff, Frasier and Tyler-Dupree were arrested. Both are charged with murder and being held without bond. Frasier was also charged with possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

According to The Post and Courier, both suspects had prior criminal records, and, in fact, at the time of the shooting, Frasier was out on bond for possession of a stolen vehicle. Likewise, Tyler-Dupree has a record that includes at least eight prior arrests over the last two years, for infractions ranging from possession of a controlled substance to second-degree burglary, with Frasier having a similar record.

During the bond hearing, Garrett’s family expressed anger toward the suspects. Moses Garrett, the victim’s father, called them cowards. However, Dupree-Tyler fired back at the family.

“With all due respect to the family, they coming at me the wrong way because I haven’t murdered anyone,” Dupree-Tyler noted before promptly being silenced by the judge, who refused to let Frasier even speak.

Shooting this guy after he had helped them is a real jerk thing to do. The fact that the guy questioned the teens about the $20.00 leads me to suspect that the guy really needed the money. It doesn’t sound like even a concealed carry license would have helped this victim. We are lucky these criminals were taken off of the streets because these guys would have committed more murder if they weren’t caught.

You cannot help anyone anymore. Hitch hiker, person with flat, stuck in ditch, etc. etc. You are liable to get smacked over the back off the head with a tire iron and thrown into the back of a van while trying to help someone. I don’t want to wake up to “He put’s the lotions on the skin; Or he gets the hose again”.
