Competing in her third straight Olympic Games in Women’s Trap, Alaska native Corey Cogdell-Unrein, won her second lifetime medal Sunday, taking home the bronze for Team USA in the event.
Cogdell-Unrein, 29, who represented the nation in both 2008 and 2012, added a second Olympic bronze to her stack of medals she keeps in her gun safe next to her Krieghoff shotgun for inspiration.
She placed third overall in the event after coming in fourth in the qualifying rounds, hitting 68 of 75 targets, then hitting 13/15 in the medal round. The Eagle-River native says she has matured as an athlete.
“In 2008, I was only two years into the sport and now I’ve put close to 10 years into it and I’m a much different athlete,” she said in a statement released through USA Shooting. “Every athlete goes through the ups and downs and when you go out there and earn a medal, it just makes it so much more meaningful,” Cogdell-Unrein said.
The wife of Chicago Bears defensive lineman Mitch Unrein, kicker Robbie Gould helped outfit the Bears with Team Unrein shirts in a show of support.

Speaking of Chicago, the Chicago Tribune walked back a headline they released which only identified her as Unrein’s wife.

Notably, however, though the paper displayed an image of Cogdell-Unrein in her shooting vest with a shotgun, they did not mention her sport or event in either headline.
As noted by USA Shooting, her second bronze medal puts her in rare company with teammate Kim Rhode as only the second U.S. woman to earn multiple Olympic medals in Shooting.
