Across the world, more and more people are asking: Why is marijuana banned? Why are people still sent to prison for using or selling it?

Most of us assume it’s because someone, somewhere sat down with the scientific evidence, and figured out that cannabis is more harmful than other drugs we use all the time—like alcohol and cigarettes.

Somebody worked it all out, in our best interest.

But when I started to go through the official archives—researching my book Chasing The Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugsto find out why cannabis was banned back in the 1930s, I discovered that’s not what happened.

Not at all.

In 1929, a man called Harry Anslinger was put in charge of the Department of Prohibition in Washington DC. But alcohol prohibition had been a disaster. Gangsters had taken over whole neighborhoods. Alcohol—controlled by criminals—had become even more poisonous.

So alcohol prohibition finally ended–and Harry Anslinger was afraid. He found himself in charge of a huge government department, with nothing for it to do. Up until then, he had said that cannabis was not a problem. It doesn’t harm people, he explained, and “there is no more absurd fallacy” than the idea it makes people violent.

But then—suddenly, when his department needed a new purpose—he announced he had changed his mind.

He explained to the public what would happen if you smoked cannabis.

First, you will fall into “a delirious rage.” Then you will be gripped by “dreams… of an erotic character.” Then you will “lose the power of connected thought.” Finally, you will reach the inevitable end-point: “Insanity.”

Marijuana turns man into a wild beast. If marijuana bumped into Frankenstein’s monster on the stairs, Anslinger warned, the monster would drop dead of fright.

Harry Anslinger became obsessed with one case in particular. In Florida, a boy called Victor Lacata hacked his family to death with an axe. Anslinger explained to America: This is what will happen when you smoke “the demon weed.” The case became notorious. The parents of the US were terrified.

What evidence did Harry Anslinger have? It turns out at this time he wrote to the 30 leading scientists on this subject, asking if cannabis was dangerous, and if there should be a ban.

Twenty-nine wrote back and said no.

Anslinger picked out the one scientist who said yes, and presented him to the world. The press—obsessed with Victor Lacata’s axe—cheered them on.

In a panic that gripped America, marijuana was banned. The US told other countries they had to do the same. Many countries said it was a dumb idea, and refused to do it. For example, Mexico decided their drug policy should be run by doctors. Their medical advice was that cannabis didn’t cause these problems, and they refused to ban it. The US was furious. Anslinger ordered them to fall into line. The Mexicans held out—until, in the end, the US cut off the supply of all legal painkillers to Mexico. People started to die in agony in their hospitals. So with regret, Mexico sacked the doctor—and launched its own drug war.

But at home, questions were being asked. A leading American doctor called Michael Ball wrote to Harry Anslinger, puzzled. He explained he had used cannabis as a medical student, and it had only made him sleepy. Maybe cannabis does drive a small number of people crazy, he said—but we need to fund some scientific studies to find out.

Anslinger wrote back firmly. “The marijuana evil can no longer be temporized with,” he explained, and he would fund no independent science. Then, or ever.

For years, doctors kept approaching him with evidence he was wrong, and he began to snap, telling them they were “treading on dangerous ground” and should watch their mouths.

Today, most of the world is still living with the ban on cannabis that Harry Anslinger introduced, in the nation-wide panic that followed Victor Lacata’s killing spree.

But here’s the catch. Years later, somebody went and looked at the psychiatric files for Victor Lacata.

It turns out there’s no evidence he ever used cannabis.

He had a lot of mental illness in his family. They had been told a year before he needed to be institutionalized—but they refused. His psychiatrists never even mentioned marijuana in connection to him.

So, does cannabis make people mad?

The former chief advisor on drugs to the British government, David Nutt, explains—if cannabis causes psychosis in a straightforward way, then it would show in a straightforward way.

When cannabis use goes up, psychosis will go up. And when cannabis use goes down psychosis will go down.

So does that happen? We have a lot of data from a lot of countries. And it turns out it doesn’t. For example, in Britain, cannabis use has increased by a factor of about 40 since the 1960s. And rates of psychosis? They have remained steady.

In fact, the scientific evidence suggests cannabis is safer than alcohol. Alcohol kills 40,000 people every year in the US. Cannabis kills nobody—although Willie Nelson says a friend of his did once die when a bale of cannabis fell on his head.

And that is why the world is on the brink of total anarchy, because all of the demons that aren’t smoking it, are causing all of the problems, in & throughout the entire world…

Please read, early on in THE HOLY BIBLE, it speaks of seeds after its’ kind, MARIJUANA, is natural, as are a few others, but once MAN gets involved, & alters their original properties, & contaminates them, making them far worse, than their original state, there is where the FRANKENSTEIN comes in, not before, or prior too, but after MAN alters it…

Also, in THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, we find the word HERB used, which is associated with MARIJUANA, we also hear the term ~ ”BURNT OFFERING” ~ used, which is described by a sweet smelling aroma, that rises up TO THE HEAVENS, & pleases THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY…

So in closing, so how do WE know whether or not, GOD IS FOR MARIJUANA OR NOT, what if in the NEXT LIFE, every form of green vegetation, is MARIJUANA, to be smoked in REVERENCE, to THE SUPREME CREATOR, who created it for such purposes…

WELL WHOEVER MAKES IT THERE, JUST MAY FIND OUT THE TRUTH…

~ THUS SAYS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY ~ I AM…

I thought it was Rockefeller doings? He makes more money that way! Never the less, I gave that plant to My family to use at their discretion. I could well imagine that some of the defiled human cocktail frequenting the streets these days could have some funny effects. That plant will show you who you really are.

…My son is psychotic. The drugs he is ‘supposed’ to take to combat his symptoms, keep him depressed and nearly catatonic. when he gets to smoke pot, he seems a lot better. Unfortunately, he got in some trouble, by “being crazy” and can’t smoke cause of probation blood tests…So….its a battle everyday. He’ll most likely end up in jail…
…I’m sure there are a lot of stories out there that are the same.

Hunter Thompson once said, when asked about marijuana – (to paraphrase)
That, marijuana has been a source of joy and comfort to me for many years. Just like ice and beer and grapefruits.

That’s just one side of the story!

The Unholy Trinity: Anslinger, Hearst and Rockefeller – Cannabis History

BY CHERI SICARD AKA CANNABIS CHERI ON OCTOBER 14, 2015 EDUCATION, NEWS AND POLITICS

Harry Jacob Anslinger – Cannabis History

When you look historically at marijuana prohibition in the United States, three people stand above the rest in bearing responsibility for orchestrating this atrocity that continues to plague our country, and in fact the planet, to this day. Of course these three men were not totally responsible. They had help from countless others, and more stood by in cohesion, ignorance and/or apathy and allowed it to happen. But without these three: Harry Anslinger, William Randolph Hearst, and John D. Rockefeller, Jr., it is arguable that marijuana prohibition would have never happened.

Harry Jacob Anslinger (May 20, 1892 – November 14, 1975) was a military man and railroad police officer before he held office as the assistant prohibition commissioner in the Bureau of (Alcohol) Prohibition. When prohibition was repealed, the ambitious Anslinger found himself in need of job security. He found a convenient scapegoat in cannabis, now dubbed ”marihuana” in order to whip up a racist based fear frenzy against the Mexican immigrants coming over the border to work in agricultural jobs. In the northeast, black jazz musicians bore the brunt of the racist anti-marijuana rants. Practically overnight America’s favorite cash crop, hemp, was transformed into “The Devil’s Weed.”

In 1930 a new division of the Treasury Department, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, was formed and Harry Anslinger was appointed its director. Essentially the first “Drug Czar” Anslinger’s biased, racist anti-weed agenda would wreak havoc through 5 Presidential administrations until he finally left the office in 1962. Anslinger then took his crusade global, serving for two years as the United States’ representative to the United Nations Narcotics Commission.

William Randolph Heart – Cannabis History

Anslinger found a powerful ally in his prohibitionist crusade in newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst as the men shared a hatred of Mexican immigrants. Hearst’s lurid yellow journalism tales of marijuana crazed Mexicans going on murderous rampages sold lots of newspapers, but Hearst had an even bigger financial motivation. In fact many have speculated that marijuana prohibition actually had little to do with marijuana and everything to do with hemp.

When the civil war ended and slavery was abolished, hemp production became cost prohibitive due to the labor intensive processing it required. Hearst had heavily invested in the timber industry, a relatively safe bet at the time as hemp production was waning. Then came the invention of the decorticator, a machine that made processing the fibrous plant easy and affordable and suddenly Hearst’s big investment was in jeopardy as hemp paper can be made cheaper, in less time, and with less environmental impact than logging.

Another magnate who stood to lose was Standard Oil Company’s John D. Rockefeller, Jr. who pretty much had a monopoly on the US petroleum market at the time. Rockefeller was a big supporter of alcohol prohibition, in the beginning, arguably also for financial reasons – with alcohol illegal people were forced to run their cars on gasoline instead of the cheaper farm-made ethyl alcohol.

John D Rockefeller, Jr., Cannabis History

When the 22nd amendment repealed alcohol prohibition, Rockefeller faced similar competition from hemp. Rudolph Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, originally used hemp oil to fuel it. Rockefeller had a vested interest in keeping this environmentally friendly renewable resource out of the picture.

Many other industries stood to lose as well. A 1938 edition of Popular Mechanics claimed that over 25,000 products could be made from hemp – everything from cellophane to dynamite. Henry Ford even made a car out of hemp fiber than was lighter and 10 times as strong as steel.

No matter, as history has shown, corporate greed won out and marijuana became illegal in this country. These three men, in positions of great power in government, the media, and industry, used their influence to push forward an agenda that lead to the polluting of our planet, wars fought over oil, the loss of personal liberties, and the prison industrial complex.
