According to a report, a Stephens County Detention Center officer was accused of stealing prescription pills that belonged to an inmate.

Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney said an inmate’s medication came up missing after it was processed by detention officers and placed in a cabinet for him.

The inmate began complaining that some of his medication was missing.

Investigators thought the inmate may have simply taken more than his prescribed dose but the investigators ordered a recount of the pills just to be certain. While reviewing the surveillance footage, investigators noticed Detention Officer Mitchell Lewis tampering with the bottle.

According to some Stephen’s County residents, this is not the first time an inmates medication has come up missing. Former inmates to the Stephen’s County jail have reported that medication tampering is very common in the Stephen’s County jail. Aside Several inmates have committed suicide in the Stephen’s County Detention Center within the past 8 years for reasons unknown to the inmates family members.
