Explosion rocks Space X launch site at Cape Canaveral; no injuries reported

An explosion rocked the launch site for Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at Cape Canaveral in Florida on Thursday and black smoke could be seen rising into the air from the facility. No injuries were reported following the blast, officials say. The area had already been cleared ahead of pre-launch test. James Valles reporting

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. —An explosion has rocked the SpaceX launch site in Cape Canaveral.

The first explosion happened shortly after 9 a.m. and the second about 20 minutes later.         

NASA says SpaceX was conducting a test firing of its unmanned rocket when the blast occurred Thursday morning. The test, considered routine, was in advance of a planned Saturday launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Buildings several miles away shook from the blast, and multiple explosions continued for several minutes. A cloud of dark smoke filled the overcast sky.

The Brevard County Emergency Management Office said in a tweet Thursday that “there is no threat to the general public from catastrophic abort during static test fire at SpaceX launch pad at CCAFS this morning.”

SpaceX said in a statement that there were no injuries during the explosion and subsequent fire. “SpaceX can confirm that in preparation for today’s static fire, there was an anomaly on the pad resulting in the loss of the vehicle and its payload. Per standard procedure, the pad was clear and there were no injuries.”

Additional details were not immediately available. But sirens could be heard in the aftermath.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded on its pad during a test Thursday morning at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. No one was injured.

Witnesses reported seeing a fireball, hearing multiple explosions, feeling shock waves in buildings several miles away at Kennedy Space Center and seeing a plume of smoke rising from Launch Complex 40 just after 9 a.m.

“SpaceX can confirm that in preparation for today’s static fire, there was an anomaly on the pad resulting in the loss of the vehicle and its payload,” SpaceX said in a statement. “Per standard procedure, the pad was clear and there were no injuries.”

Officials at SpaceX, the Air Force’s 45th Space Wing and KSC could not immediately confirm what happened or if there were any injuries.

The rocket was preparing for a test-firing of its nine Merlin main engines as a standard check of their readiness for launch, and the area was cleared for that hazardous operation.  SOURCE
