Russia Today is apparently upset because it is getting attacked by people it claims are flat earth conspiracy theorists about the validity of its new “Space 360°” Project.

RT put out what it says is the “First-Ever 4k Panoramic View of Earth from Aboard ISS” and so-called “Flat Earthers” are claiming the entire thing is faked.

Flat Earthers believe that the Earth is just that — a flat disc instead of a globe, a theory that is hundreds of years old which has seen a renewed resurgence in recent years. Others claim the resurgence of flat earth is just a way to discredit the conspiracy theorist crowd wholesale.

Flat earth is a touchy subject. The discord this theory has sewn within the alternative community is deep. People on both sides get really angry really fast when flat vs. round earth is even brought up.

Either way, during the filming of RT’s Space 360 project, Russian cosmonaut Andrey Borisenko stepped in it when he called out the flat earth conspiracy directly while filming aboard the International Space Station:

“You can see from here that the Earth is round – no elephants or whales holding it up,” he said, commencing a tirade of accusations, including “BS! Why use a fisheye lens to show convince people that the earth is round that camera is twisting and turning everything in front of it. I personally don’t think that anyone believes this BS.”

Borisenko is wrong, however. Lots of people who do apparently believe it got pretty miffed at his statements. RT fought back with a scathing article using lots of animated gifs to point to how insane flat earthers are.

To be clear, the video is shot with a fisheye lens and doesn’t actually show a 360° pan of Earth even though many viewers who do believe we are being lied to about the shape and nature of the planet have requested a 360° pan as proof that the Earth is a globe once and for all.

While being all glib about the “crazy” flat earthers, RT responded that it did not plan to provide such proof:

“A number of viewers have asked if a space walk will be filmed using the 360 video in order to help verify that the cosmonauts are actually in space and not a Hollywood studio. RT hopes to be able to do this in the future, but for now this isn’t something we have scheduled.”

But if flat earthers are really just the wacko nutjobs that RT in making them out to be, then why don’t they have the pan scheduled?

Just saying. It’d be nice if someone would schedule the shot already, if for no other reason than to put the theory to rest once and for all.
