Sporting conglomerate Vista Outdoor reported a 24 percent increase in sales for its second quarter, showing ammo, gun accessories and outdoor goods are selling high alongside record-setting gun sales.
Vista showed $684 million in quarterly sales, up from $551.4 million from the year before, according to company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Nine months into the fiscal year, Vista has also been making gains with $1.3 billion in total sales, up from $1.066 billion last year, the filings show.
With two months left in the calendar year, the raw number for background checks in 2016 is less than a million shy of 2015’s total with 22.2 million. Although they do not equate to a one-to-one transaction, industry analysts use the federal system as a barometer for gun sales.
For the three months covering Vista’s second quarter, July through September, adjusted checks show a 17 percent increase with 3.58 million, according to data collected by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Yet, the only gun company falling under Vista’s umbrella is Savage Arms, a popular brand for hunting rifles and shotguns. Vista’s shooting sports department is comprised of more than a dozen ammo companies and gun accessory makers. Vista attributes 53 percent of total sales, or $364 million, to gun and gun related products.
