Andrew Kerr for Western Journalism reports, Texas Senator Ted Cruz is calling for Congress to cease funding to the United Nations following a resolution passed Friday. The resolution, passed by the UN Security Council, officially labeled Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory illegal, and demanded that “Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities.”

The nation of Israel has been lashing out furiously over the past few days after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning the building of settlements in occupied territory.
In addition to some strong words directed at the Obama administration, Israel also reportedly told New Zealand before the vote occurred that if New Zealand supported the measure, it would be considered an act of war, The U.K. Guardian reported.
It is unclear exactly how the two nations would go to war. It is possible that this was simply empty rhetoric, as neither nation has the capability of launching a full-scale war against the other.
“If you continue to promote this resolution, from our point of view it will be a declaration of war. It will rupture the relations and there will be consequences. We’ll recall our ambassador (from New Zealand) to Jerusalem,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told the foreign minister of New Zealand.
These threats didn’t work, because New Zealand ended up supporting the resolution. The New Zealand Herald reported that Israel did withdraw its ambassador from the island nation and it also barred New Zealand’s ambassador from Israel.
It soon appeared that Israel was backing down on its threat of war with New Zealand. TVNZ reported that after recalling its ambassador, Israel stated that “no further sanctions” would be enacted against New Zealand.
Israel may have backed down from its rhetoric due to strong statements from the incoming Trump administration that President-elect Donald Trump will be much friendlier to Israel that the Obama administration has been.
Israel just has to wait a few more weeks until there is a new administration and a new policy.
