Divination

Through divination, people have tried to learn information about the future by interpreting omens or speaking with supernatural forces. Divination is often formal and ritualized, in contrast with the more personal fortune-telling. Skeptics through the ages have dismissed divination as a superstition. Since prehistoric times, however, divination has been seen as an effective way to plan for the future. The ancient Romans and Greeks took divination to new levels, even enjoyingit as part of religious services. Science helps us predict events like weather forecasts, eclipses, and volcanic eruptions. Divination, on the other hand, is based on the belief that supernatural forces can influence the events of daily life. The scientific process is based on experimentation, with results carefully tracked and noted. In divination, the results are rarely assessed. In fact, there is a taboo against repeating the same question in hopes of getting a more favorable answer. Without being able to ask the same question over and over, proving the effectiveness of divination is difficult. Regardless of the scientific basis, divination is still seen as a way to channel important messages from the universe.
