Tiny, gun-shaped house key causes stir with cruise liner security (VIDEO)
A Florida couple headed out for vacation on a Carnival cruise ship last weekend was stopped by security at Port Canaveral as they attempted to board the boat because one of them was carrying a 2-inch house key shaped like a gun.
“First of all, you can’t even get your finger in the hole if it was a gun and you can barely get a finger around the grip,” said Henry Echevarria.
Nonetheless, Echevarria was told he either had to ditch the key or the vacation.
Security personnel eventually allowed Echevarria to lock the key away in a safe so he could retrieve it when he returned from the cruise, but Echevarria said that left him concerned.
“They have my address, they have my key, all they need to do is make a replica and next thing you know they could be at my house,” he explained.
The entire incident left Echevarria frustrated and feeling like it was something that never should have happened in the first place. Carnival agreed.
In fact, while the company confirmed that “all firearms including replicas, imitations and their components” are prohibited from being brought aboard, the company also confirmed that a 2-inch gun-shaped house key is not their idea of a replica or imitation firearm.
The company said the matter would be discussed with security personnel to ensure it does not happen again.
“It was upsetting,” said Echevarria. “It was comical because it’s like, really, what am I going to do with that? You know they give you steak knives on the cruise.”
