Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is a chemical compound in the form of a white solid crystalline, and often as a fine powder, with a salty taste, and alkaline properties.

Its numerous properties have been used for millennia. In the ancient Egypt, people used the natural deposits of sodium bicarbonate to create paint for their hieroglyphics.

The first factory which produced baking soda was opened in 1846 in New York, by two bakers, John Dwight and Austin Church. It has a range of uses, as it can be used as a cleaning agent, medicine, beauty care product, and much more.

These are some of the medicinal uses of baking soda:

  • It raises the pH levels
  • If mixed with water in the form of paste, it treats allergic reactions due to poison ivy/sumac
  • Mixing baking soda and water creates a very effective antacid
  • Baking soda effectively removes splinters
  • The use of sodium bicarbonate in the treatment of kidney failure reduces the progression of the disease.

Sodium bicarbonate is vital for the health, and it is produced by the kidneys and pancreas to prevent kidney damage. When this production is reduced, acid starts to pile up and the body struggles to neutralize it.

At this point, a cellular deterioration begins, and the body needs to eliminate the acid buildup and raise the levels of nutrients, water, and oxygen.

This is how to use baking soda in order to repair the kidneys:

-You should dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda under the tongue, and the next day, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of salt into 1.5 liters of water. Drink this solution for 2-3 days.

People suffering from kidney disease often suffer from reduced bicarbonate levels, and this medical condition is known as metabolic acidosis.

Dr. Thomas P. Kennedy maintains:

“Substituting a sodium bicarbonate solution for saline infusion prior to administration of radio contrast material seems to reduce the incidence of nephropathy.”

3 million British suffer from chronic kidney disease, and about 37,800 of those patients require renal replacement therapy, which costs $45,165 (£30,000) annually.

Researchers at the White chapel hospital in Royal London conducted the first controlled test in a clinical setting, and found that sodium bicarbonate can significantly reduce the effects of kidney disease. According to the team leader, Magdi Yaqoob, a professor of renal medicine:

‘This is the first randomized controlled study of its kind.’ ‘It’s amazing.’

‘A simple remedy like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), when used appropriately, can be very effective.’

The study involved 134 test patients with advanced kidney disease and metabolic acidosis, and a randomly selected small group was given a daily dose of a small amount of sodium bicarbonate in the form of a pill for a year.

In the end, their kidney function declined at a normal rate expected with normal aging and reduced the need for dialysis.

Furthermore, this group had a 2/3 slower health decline than the other participants. Only 9% of the group who received sodium bicarbonate had an accelerated progression of kidney disease, and the percent of the other participants was 45%.

Professor Magdi Yaqoob added:

‘This study shows baking soda can be useful for people with kidney failure. That is, as long as the dose is regulated and under supervision.’

‘What happens is the inflammation of kidney is prevented by baking soda because a chemical reaction takes place limiting ammonia production in the kidney.’

‘This cheap and simple strategy also improves patients’ nutritional well-being and has the potential to improve quality of life and of course a clinical outcome that can remove the need for dialysis.’

‘Baking soda is not classed as a drug so this study has never been tried before.’

    “It raises the pH levels”

no it doesn’t. Say hello to stomach acid.

if it did than you have more problems than just kidney stones

    • FraMar

Yes you’re right, however baking soda has a pH level about 8, which is slightly alkaline, so he must have meant to say LOWER the pH (like a Tums). “EarthRise” usually has good posts.

seems you don’t know much about anything at all, also seems all you say is negative

if bicarb doesn’t raise Ph, then tell me how it could possibly correct acid tummy in MINUTES, much much faster than any “pharma” product

HCL is a stomach acid. When the body is in an acidic state,Baking soda neutralizes HCL and thus lowers the ph level, returning it to a more alkaline level

        • Andy

higher Ph is more alkaline,,, lower Ph is more acidic

          basic stuff gurl,,,

We’ve got a bunch of uneducated goofballs on this site. Raising pH level is going toward higher alkaline levels. Lowering pH levels go toward acidic levels. So yes, baking soda raises pH levels.

Someone once said “it is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt” … sounds appropriate here.

That was Honest Abe who said that and here’s another quote i’m rather fond of…

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.

        … Albert Einstein.

‘Baking soda is not classed as a drug so this study has never been tried before.’
Better would be to write: ‘Baking soda was never tried and tested as it could not be patented and hence would bring in no money’. The FDA is not interested in curing medical disease but only curing the ‘money desease of the FDA’.

I agree with this article to an extent. When using baking soda, never drink it an hour before or after you eat. That is so that it will not interfere with you natural stomach acids before and after eating your food. A few doctors across the country have used baking soda to get patients off the transplant list and dialyses. In my case, I was diagnosed in 2011 with stage III kidney disease. I also had a kidney stone so big that I was told that if it ever decided to pass, I would have to have surgery. A doctor friend of mine that is nationally and internationally known told me I need to purchase a water machine made by a Japanese company ENAGIC that makes “Kegan” water. I did so. The water machine made different pH water at neutral pH-7, pH-8.5, pH-9, and pH-9.5. I immediately started with pH-9.5. I avoided drinking it 1 hour before and after eating. I constantly had this water with me all the time. I avoided foods and beverages that produce very acidic pH levels. Even bottled waters are very acidic in addition to being high in toxic BPA and fluoride. Water was about all I drank. After six months, I returned to my nephrologist (kidney doctor) was tested. He was shocked when the x-ray showed know more kidney stone, and that I had gone from Stage III back to Stage II. It has been 6 years now a test results show I no longer have kidney disease. It is very important to stay and maintain a neutral alkaline of pH-7 to pH-7.5. A body that is maintained at very acidic pH levels is setting themselves up for all kinds if diseases, viruses and especially cancer.

bicarb has so many medicinal uses it’s not funny

introduces ‘base’ into the body & raises Ph
    corrects acid reflux in minutes
    kills ulcers
kills infection (rub some into an infected wound and the infection dies within hours)
    corrects tinea (athletes foot)
kills foot odor (no more smelly feet)

just a little research will open a new door to the many benefits of bicarb

Baking soda like 1/4 teaspoon in about 8 oz of pure water and half a squeezed lemon is a good remedy for acid stomach, hangover, or to help eliminate too much acid in the body. This is all basic but some people like Tums or Rolaids like my Dad use to use.

I prefer baking soda and lemon juice. It also will pick you up and calm you down and then you can write cool music like this new song I just came up with … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM1c-yppRXo

Valuable information! Looking forward to seeing your notes posted. Thank you for sharing the nice article. Good to see your article. http://appsforsys.com/whatsapp-web-for-pc-laptop/

I take a dose of the baking soda among my tea every day in the morning and in the evening but not too much that would mess my stomach. All harmfull bacteria and viruses seem to avoid me. I am never ill although in the past years, I contracted every passing by flu. Even my old teeth have become white and my mouth never stinks.
