A New Street Drug Can Kill You by Touching Your Skin: What You Need to Know

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The opioid epidemic is a real tragedy. It has been devastating states like West Virginia, Vermont, and Maine — among others — and it’s been the number one factor in a major incarceration shift that is still seldom discussed by the media.

But as soon as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new set of national standards for prescribing painkillers, yet another deadly drug threat is beginning to concern authorities in certain states.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu spoke at a press conference this week, warning that a drug that’s 10,000 times stronger than morphine has made its way into the state. As a result, many first responders have been left scrambling to find a way to handle this new threat.

Carfentanil, a powerful new opioid, has already claimed three lives.

Engineered to be used as an elephant tranquilizer, the drug’s lethal dosage is 20 micrograms. Since the product can cause deadly effects just by being sprinkled on someone’s skin, authorities are highly concerned.

Manchester Fire’s EMS Director Chris Hickey is warning New Hampshire residents they must be “hyper, hyper vigilant of what is out there, hyper vigilant of where you put your hands, what you come in contact with.”

There is nothing out there other than going in in hazmat suits on every single overdose that is going to completely protect us. We just have to be super, super careful with it,” Hickey told his own crew.

The drug is so powerful that first responders are even having a hard time reversing overdoses when they arrive at emergency locations.

On one occasion, Hickey said, one of his men had to use six to eight doses of Narcan, an overdose reversal drug, to revive a victim — twice the dose used in most cases.

As doctors and first responders notice a pattern, they are also warning the public that Narcan isn’t going to be enough from now on. So what is next?

Fear, of course.

As state and local authorities find themselves panicking over this issue, many will ask for tougher laws. Federal agencies will then intervene, adding further restrictions to the already heavily regulated drug market in the United States. Adding fuel to the fire, the drug war will continue to target opioids like heroin and opium while Congress continues the process of imposing strict limits on some opioid prescriptions.

As more restrictions are applied, users will have a harder time gaining access to the substances they are already addicted to, forcing them to turn to the black market for their fix.

With this, incidents like the ones we’re seeing in New Hampshire will become even more common, prompting further government involvement. As this snowballs into further restrictions, the opioid epidemic will reach unimaginable levels, killing a record number of people, making orphans out of countless children, and creating another boom in U.S. incarceration rates.

While it’s easy to understand why locals in New Hampshire are afraid, the rhetoric and reality on the ground should not be used to push for more heavy-handed intervention from local and federal governments. Instead, it’s time to look deep into how the opioid crisis started, keeping in mind that the government’s own fruitless battle against drugs was the very root of what is now concerning New Hampshire authorities.

Like New Hampshire’s Drug Lab Director Tim Pifer, we agree that “this is certainly unfortunately just the tip of the iceberg.” But just like any iceberg, its base lies in dark, cold waters. Unless we’re ready to be honest with ourselves, finding the courage to dive deep to find where it begins, we will never know how huge this problem really is. And if we’re not willing to look at the root of the problem, we won’t be able to find a proper solution.

A drug that ends drug abuse. No need for rehab, legal incarceration or criminal record. The be all and end of all who embraced drugs as a viable life style option. I would advise getting high on life instead. Or render it mute.

    • Hi NSA, kiss my artichoke

“War on drugs” , my granny’s horse leather ASS!!!
“War on Competition” is what it was and IS!

I agree their is a serious problem with abuse of Opioids, and mostly people who dont truly need them and sell them on the streets!!!, but once again i have too stand up for those of us who DO need them!! It is already almost impossible too get a doctor too prescribe them in the first place, and when you do find one they are scared too death too do so, but feel morally wrong because they know that the one thier prescribing it too , TRULY does need them!!! Let me tell you all this, and particularly the writer of this article!!, all we ever hear about is the horrible abuses that occur from opioids , and the seriousiousness of the drug, blah blah blah!!., but what we dont hear is how it keeps millions of us who truly need it( too even have a kind of life ), because of such SEVERE pain that we go through!!! Most people already know of the severe pain that cancer patients go through ., but i want too point out something that most people dont think of. Chronic pain sufferers NEVER have a good day, they NEVER have a day when it eases off, they never have any relief, because the pain is CHRONIC!!! Once the Pain medications wear off , guess what , the pain goes back up!! YES, their is a problem with the meds, opioids can cause death ,and addiction, of course, BUT SO DOES ALCOHOL, SO DOES CAFFEINE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A HEART CONDITION. WHAT ABOUT THE ENERGY DRINKS, OR DIET PILLS, OR TOO MUCH TYLENOL, so are we going too restrict them as well????!!!!! What about Aspirin???!, it thins out ur blood , and any kind of bad cut can make one bleed out!!! It is almost impossible too get Opioids legally as it is!!, IF ANYONE WANTS TOO MAKE IT HARDER for those of us who get them Legally, then Millions of people wont be able too take the pain!!! Go after those who dont truly need them, arrest them, go after those people but dont restrict opioids any further for ( LAW abiding people )!!!!! Remember all it takes is too blow out your back is a wrong turn with a load ur carrying!!!!, then guess what :::: when ur pain goes wayy up too a lvl 9 or 10 , then just try too get a Opioid ,!!!!!! BTW that lvl 9 or 10 DOES NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT PAIN MEDS!!!!!! My back blew out on me during hard work one day, not my fault!!! I tried numerous types of non-narcotics , but they didnt help the pain. Its easy too cuss people , and talk smack about thier bodies and ccall them junkies, or drugies, UNTIL , it happens too YOU. I think everyone should have too suffer like I and millions of others do for 1 week. That would give you all a good taste of what its like too suffer day in and day out!!!

Please go read about when to use “to” and “too”.

Otherwise, I agree with your post. A doctor knows those patients they can trust with pain meds, and those they can’t. But something that would put an end to this epidemic is legalizing, and decriminalizing the natural, healthful miracle plant called marijuana. Its yet to kill anyone, and is less destructive than legal pain killers, or even alcohol. Furthermore, it works better than legal pain killers, and many other maintenance medications. I don’t use it, but I support making it legal, while still carrying the same penalties as driving under the influence of any other drug or alcohol.

Who created this epidemic? The government. Who will suffer as they try to clean up their mess? We the people. I take pain medication as well. A very strong narcotic, but only at bed time.

Those who are anti-marijuana really need to research the topic better, and then ask themselves why a natural weed that has never killed anybody, can not only get you a hefty fine in most states, but can also get you a lengthy prison sentence, is illegal, but drugs that kill thousands every year, and create addicts who will rob and kill to get it in some cases, is perfectly fine to prescribe. I’ll give those people a hint. Follow the money!

        • trashman

Me: you are fortunate that you only have too take them at bedtime. Their are obviously different kinds of pain. Some people can blow their backs out , and not feel pain, ( lucky them ), others however well…. My condition is one of Intense pain. It feels like having someone with a small hydrolic jack in between the vertebrae jacking it up while someone else is slowly sticking a hot metal rod on a live nerve. Ive felt the ( Full pain), without the narcotic being in my system, and it is UNBEARABLE! When my doctor, saw my MRI , my doctor freaked saying OMG! I agree with most the comments here, and never wish this on anyone. I do agree with the Medical use of Marijuana , and think it can help like many. , but the state i live in will be the last one too legalize it. BTW thier is also a natural alternative that my family is trying too relieve pain , but unfortunately it isnt strong enough for my pain , but does help. , its called * Bitter Lettuce *, and it does relieve pain. I saw a article on BIN, and thought what do i h ave too lose. We found a company which makes it btw , in capsules. , its A I R American Indian Resources, out of Guntersville Al. For anyone suffering from pain and cant find a doctor who is willing too put thier necks on the chopping block, this might help you.

You forgot our most serious drug problem, tobacco.

Having been addicted to alcohol, pain killers, tobacco and caffeine, I can tell you that alcohol addiction is a BITCH. Alcohol withdrawals are unbelievable and indescribable. And it destroys your internal organs.
Opiates are almost as bad to kick.
Tobacco withdrawals are a nightmare for some and somewhat slight for others.
Caffiene withdrawals, when I quit coffee for a few days I get a headache.

It really is not accurate to compare drugs like coffee to far more dangeorus drugs like tobacco, alcohol, and the shit doctors get people hooked on.

Also, something I discovered as that when I kicked the various pain killers the docs put me on, about six months after I kicked my pain levels dropped drastically. Pain killers seem to have made my sensitivity to pain greatly magnified.

Aspirin is a godsend, It works for me just fine. And if the government would quit being stupid and legalize pot, a huge decrease in this countries drug problems would be likely.
It is by far the best pain killer I ever used.

I am a chronic pain sufferer and have been for 20 years +. All the pain killers did was make me stupid to the pain, it didn’t fix it. As I say, they seem to have actually made it worse when I was not taking them. And like I said, the withdrawals are hell, they are Satan himself chasing you.

Know need two Tai your gut in two nots.
Do knot put hour 1st responders lives in danger.
The junkie decides weather two use, and no matter watt we dew, they will keep yousing.
Witch is more valuable, Ann EMT, oar a junkie?

    • Rockledge

If you think people do nutty shit now, wait til the addicts to this crap start having withdrawals.
Withdrawals make people nuts. Withdrawals from something that strong, God only knows what will happen.

    • dj dawg

Yeah just wait till a bunch of strung out elephants start running amok

      • Rockledge

Pretty good. Made me chuckle a bit.

    • tattiio

New? Give me a break, this has been around well over a year. Not to mention, nobody likes a pussy who cannot handle their liquor.

      • Rockledge

Nobody likes pussies who think being able to “handle their liquor” is a sign of some social superiority either.
I guarantee you I could drink everyone in the bar under the table. I am immune to alcohol, which is why I got so horribly addicted to it.

And I was NEVER proud of it. I was ashamed of how much I drank. In a time period of less than 5 years I pissed enough money down clip joint urinals to build an expensive home.
I would get pulled over by cops when I had a snootfull for some minor shit like having a tail light out, and they would let me go, because I could drink and drink and drink and still look and behave sober.

That is nothing to brag about. Again, I never bragged about being able to do that shit, and consider guys who do brag about it to be low rent imbeciles.
