Armed protesters show up at New Orleans Confederate monument slated for removal (VIDEO)
Protesters, some of who were armed with guns, gathered near a Confederate monument in New Orleans over the weekend and into Monday night to express opposition to the monuments’ impending removal.
The monuments, which feature Jefferson Davis, Gen. Robert E. Lee, and Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, are set to be removed and protesters came to the area following rumors that they were to be taken down Monday evening.
Officials confirmed that while the statues will be coming down, there was never a plan to do it Monday and a date has not been set.
Nonetheless, the fact that some protesters were armed had some questioning whether they violated federal law by bringing the weapons into a school zone.
Federal law states no guns can be brought within 1,000 feet of a school, with violators facing a $3,000 fine and up to 5.5 years in prison.
According to local media, the Morris Jeff Community School is less than 650 feet from the Jefferson Davis statue. However, the Morris Jeff resource officer said the protesters remained more than 1,000 feet from the school.
