Ginger has been found to be as powerful as ibuprofen, a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug that is used to help pain. The best part about drinking ginger water instead of taking ibuprofen is that there are no nasty side effects. Ibuprofen can cause damage to your stomach and intestines. Ginger water can help get rid of painful menstrual cramps, knee pain and symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Ginger water is also wonderful for helping to encourage better digestion. It can help prevent nausea in pregnant women or when you are ill and it’s powerful antioxidant content can help prevent colds, flu and vertigo.
Those same antioxidants have also been found to help fight cancer in the body. This is due to their ability to suppress pro-inflammatory TNF-α, also known as tumor necrosis factor alpha. TNF-α is a cell-signaling protein that is involved in inflammation throughout your body. Along with cancer, it has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, depression, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease.
Since ginger water can help suppress TNF-α, this also means that it’s helpful for fighting off these other illnesses, too!
Consumption of ginger water has also been found to help prevent heart disease. Ginger helps to lower blood levels of LDL cholesterol, or low-density lipid cholesterol. This is the ‘bad’ cholesterol and increased levels can lead to a condition called atherosclerosis, a disease where plaque builds up and hardens your arteries.
Ginger Water
Ingredients
- 1 to 2 inches of fresh ginger root
- 2 to 3 cups of water
- ½ lemon
- Raw honey
Instructions
- Take the 1 to 2 inch piece of fresh ginger root and grate into a bowl.
- Add the 2 to 3 cups of water and the juice of ½ a lemon.
- Sweeten the mixture with raw honey.
- Let sit for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Strain the mixture into a glass. This drink can be consumed warm or chilled.
- Sip ginger water throughout the day to help prevent illness or to help you feel better when you’re sick.
