UPDATE: The Hanford Site

For those who have been asleep the last couple of days, here’s the latest on the Hanford tunnel collapse.

The Hanford Site has been a nuclear disaster waiting to happen ever since the US developed atomic weapons in WWII. Many don’t realize that the ARMED FORCES & MILITARY COMPLEX are worse polluters than INDUSTRY. Hushed up and not discussed. It’s a national security issue… YEAH!

Add to that the deteriorating nuclear power plants (materials are failing too fast) with no place to safely store used radioactive material, and guess what? Disaster around the corner for most of the country. Ditto for Europe and other countries who thought Nuke Power was the latest greatest thing!

Meanwhile, in Japan, denial is overwhelming any common sense they may have left. They are now growing rice again near Fukushima! After all, if the government says it’s OK, it’s OK!

Fukushima village begins sowing rice for first time since nuclear crisis

FUKUSHIMA – Rice planting for commercial sales began on Wednesday in a village in Fukushima Prefecture for the first time since the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Hanford nuclear site tunnel collapse leads to mass evacuation, “radiological contamination” and FAA air space ban

(Natural News) A tunnel used to shuttle hot fuel rods around the Hanford Nuclear Reservation near Seattle, WA has suffered a catastrophic structural failure followed by a partial collapse of about 400 square feet of its roof. The tunnel is widely reported as being “full of highly contaminated materials,” according to local news channel King 5.

For many years, the Hanford facility manufactured plutonium-239 for building nuclear weapons. Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,000 years.

Immediately following the tunnel collapse, workers were ordered to immediately assume a “take cover” position, while the FAA slapped an air space ban over the site of the nuclear emergency. 

The Oregon Department of Energy activated its “emergency operation center” located in Oregon.

King 5 also reports:

A manager sent a message to all personnel telling them to “secure ventilation in your building” and “refrain from eating or drinking.”

As we detailed previously, radioactive leak problems at the Hanford Site, a nuclear storage tank in Washington State, are nothing new.  We first wrote about the ongoing radioative leakage at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, created as part of the Manhattan Project to build the atomic bomb, in 2013.

As a reminder, during the Cold War, the project was expanded to include nine nuclear reactors and five large plutonium processing complexes, which produced plutonium for most of the 60,000 weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Alas, the site has been leaking ever since, as many of the early safety procedures and waste disposal practices were inadequate and Hanford’s operations released significant amounts of radioactive materials into the air and the neighboring Columbia River.
