95-year-old WWII vet gets new AC thanks to Texas cops (VIDEO)

A 95-year-old Forth Worth resident is grateful for the actions of two police officers who responded when he needed help.

Julius Hatley awakened last week to learn his only air conditioning unit stopped working in the midst of the Texas heat. He was unsure what to do, so he called 911, and while such calls are typically considered “low priority” the responding officers quickly realized that it was, in fact, an emergency situation for the elderly World War II veteran.

When officers William Margolis and Christopher Weir arrived at Hatley’s home just after 8 a.m., it was already 85 degrees inside the house, Hatley was soaked in sweat, and they knew the mercury would only rise.

“I talked to my partner and I talked to the gentleman and said, ‘Look, we’re going to help you out. I’ll be back in just a little bit. I promise you.’” Margolis told Fox 4.

So the officers went to Home Depot to purchase Hatley a new AC unit, but when the store manager realized what the officers were up to, Home Depot chipped in $150 to help pay for the unit.

The officers then returned to Hatley’s home and, although it took a bit of trial and error, they got Hatley’s new AC unit installed and working well.

And as it turned out, while Margolis was still standing in the checkout line at Home Depot, Weir snapped a photo, which Weir’s wife later shared on Facebook. The social media post soon brought more and more attention to the officers’ random act of kindness, but Weir said it’s all in the job.

“This is what we do the job for. We don’t do it to issue citations and arrests, we do it to help people,” Weir said. “We got to see some humanity today and makes all of us feel good.”

And while the window unit is working fine for Hatley, Margolis and Weir said they’re hoping to get his central AC unit fixed.
