Early risers along the Atlantic Coast of the USA might see see a light show before sunrise on Sunday, June 4th. A sounding/research rocket scheduled to launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia between 4:26 am and 4:41 am EDT will deploy ten chemical-filled canisters, creating a network of red and blue-green vapors 96 to 124 miles high. Researchers will track the motions of the colorful gases to study the dynamics of Earth’s ionosphere.
The clouds, or vapor tracers, are formed “through the interaction of barium, strontium, and cupric-oxide,” according to NASA.
Since the canisters will be released about 100 miles (160 km) above the ground, the space agency says they “pose absolutely no hazard to residents along the mid-Atlantic coast.”
