A man intervened during a police pursuit in Ferndale, Michigan, Monday and stopped the suspect in his tracks by ramming into his car with his own vehicle.

The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. when an officer was randomly checking license plates. One of the numbers he ran turned up warrants, but when the officer initiated a traffic stop, the suspect led him on a high-speed chase.

The suspect, later identified as Kolbe K. Jordan, 26, plowed through traffic and over sidewalks in an attempt to elude authorities. However, when he turned into the parking lot of a shopping center, the good Samaritan saw what was happening, as well as the potential danger ahead – a parking lot full of pedestrians.

The good Samaritan drove his van right into the Chevy Impala driven by Jordan. Police soon surrounded Jordan’s vehicle and had him on the ground and in cuffs in a matter of seconds. They also found a loaded handgun with a 30-round magazine, as well as 10 bundles of heroin. The gun was previously reported stolen out of Detroit.

Jordan was arrested and faces numerous charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, third-degree fleeing and eluding, possession of narcotics, and driving while license suspended.

At the time of his arrest, Jordan was already on probation after serving time for gun and drug offenses.

As for the good Samaritan, Ferndale police Sgt. Baron Brown said he stuck around and gave them a statement after suffering only minor damage to his van.

“I think anybody at this point might have an oops feeling — ‘Did I really do that? Was that the right thing?’ We think the guy’s heart was in the right spot. We think he felt the parking lot was full of people, and he wanted to stop this car before it went into the crowd. He could see all the police cars in pursuit,” Brown said.
