A Texas congressman who called for President Donald Trump to be impeached last month is now developing formal articles of impeachment against the president.

Although most Congressional Democratic leaders have said they need facts upon which to base any impeachment proceeding, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, said he has no need of them.

“The facts are simple and indisputable,” Green said Tuesday. “The president fired the FBI director because the director was investigating the president’s campaign connections to Russian interference in the presidential election.”

Green said further investigations, and even Thursday’s upcoming testimony of former FBI Director James Comey, will not change the need for impeachment.

“This will remain obstruction of justice regardless of the findings of any investigation,” he said.

“Obstruction of justice by the president is the problem,” he added. “Impeachment by Congress is the solution.”

Green formally called for the impeachment of Trump May 17 during a speech on the House floor.

“This is about my position. This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved. The president must be impeached,” Green said in that speech.

Green is not the only member of the Congressional Black Caucus to demand impeachment. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., began calling for impeachment from the day Trump took office.

House leaders have sought to tamp down a hasty rush to impeachment without enough facts to justify the step.

“When that word comes up I always say to my colleagues in the Congress, my constituents, and people across the country what I said before: Anything you do has to be based on data, evidence, facts. So you can speculate, but it’s got to be the law and the facts and how they match up,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Monday.

Other Democrats who are opposed to Trump are leery of impeachment at this stage.

“I don’t think impeachment is the move right now,” said Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y. “I just want to know the facts.”

Any effort to impeach Trump would require the House to pass articles of impeachment against the president, who would then face a Senate trial on those charges. That is not likely in the current House, which is controlled by Republicans.

The last effort to impeach a president came after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, when the House voted to impeach President Bill Clinton, but the Senate acquitted Clinton of all charges.   SOURCE
