-.If you’re anything like me, America’s obsession with ornamental lawns seems nothing short of folly at best, sheer polluting waste at worst. Many are unaware that lawns are one of the largest sources of pollution in the US, with 40 million acres under cultivation, they absorb three million tons of chemical fertilizers and 30,000 tons of pesticides, and use 800 million gallons of gasoline for mowing each year.
And for what? A green patch that serves very little purpose, yet creates staggering pollution. Meanwhile, we have a severe need for more localized food systems and access to affordable produce in neighborhoods throughout the US.
We can complain and fume about this state of affairs — or we can do something about it. Recognizing there had to be a better way, the idea of Fleet Farming was born.

If you are resourceful –
Grass is still a permeable surface (as in, to recharge the water table). It is not a heat island. It is a living space outside of air conditioning. It feeds herbivores, and is a source of biomass, to mulch and fertilize food plants. It attracts wind blown topsoil, assisting against desert-ification. It is attractive to wildlife, assuming that you don’t like to wallow in big-box-store poisons.
Every last weed is a wildflower or serves some creative purpose, when controlled and not irresponsibly eradicated.
(Preferably) well-maintained hedgerows can grow food, vertically. They can create privacy, are compatible with most laws, regarding how much has to be lawn, and how much dead material is allowed in a planting.
Be wary about what is allowable in terms of fence hight and HOA obstructionism, under the color of law. Remember what are natural rights, before colonizing a private development. Fly under the radar, undermine lawfully, or don’t support that.
