Jobless Colin Kaepernick Gets Support From Director Spike Lee

The embattled quarterback of the San Franciso 49ers, Colin Kaepernick is still jobless in the National Football League.  But, he does have support outside the franchise in the form of film director Spike Lee.

Kaepernick remains unsigned, which has led to plenty of debate about whether his decision to kneel during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality and police brutality last season has contributed to his inability to sign on with a team. But let’s put that to rest now.

No one has forgotten Kaepernick’s unwillingness to stand for the national anthem played before every football game.  It caused an uproar among the most conservative and offended the “patriotic” Americans, while others praised his bold display of free speech.  The quarterback’s support for Fidel Castro became a bone of contention as well, but that isn’t why he’s jobless.

The NFL employs rapists, murders, wife beaters, and dog fighters.  If Kaepernick could play football, he’d have a job. But the truth is, Kaepernick was one of the NFL’s worst quarterbacks last year.  He actually boasted some of the most embarrassing and disappointing statistics to date, other than myself personally rushing for more yards than running back Reggie Bush (-3) last season. Kaepernick is jobless because he isn’t a good enough quarterback to be in the NFL, not because he chapped the back sides of conservatives with his decision to use his free speech.

Nonetheless, Spike Lee still wants more attention paid to Kaepernick and the cause.  And attention should be paid to police brutality and the injustices the government commits, the reason Kaepernick protested in the first place. So it is safe to say, that the protest probably worked.  He’s got our attention.

Film director Spike Lee announced Tuesday that he will hold a rally in support of free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick at NFL headquarters in New York City on Aug. 23. Lee tweeted the following details regarding the event:

Supporting Kaepernick’s free speech should be a no-brainer for the liberty-minded Americans.  Since he didn’t actually physically harm anyone or steal from them, it shouldn’t matter how he protests the injustices by the US government.  At least he didn’t burn the holiest of symbols: the American flag.

The disinterest in Colin Kaepernick as a quarterback though has nothing to do with his willingness to put free speech front and center.  He should be looked at as a little bit of a rebel.  Knowing the backlash he was going to get, he continued his protest by kneeling during the national anthem throughout the entire 2016 season. Whether one agrees or not, that protest took guts, and Spike Lee’s support shows that that fortitude should be celebrated among all rebels; even if said rebel can’t play football.
