5 Questions to Ask When Cleaning Out Your Makeup

We’re not going to call you a hoarder, but if you’re like us, sometimes we have too much stuff. And makeup and beauty products aren’t excluded in this mass that fills our homes (and bathroom counters!).

1. Is your makeup expired? Almost all makeup has an expiration date, so be sure to check your stuff and make sure you’re not holding on to expired makeup, and especially that you’re not using it! One of the benefits of airbrush foundation and most airbrush makeup over traditional makeup is that the packaging doesn’t allow for air to enter the product as quickly. In order to ensure your airbrush makeup lasts, always keep the cap on tightly and store away from direct heat and sunlight. It’s not required for makeup to have an expiration date, so be sure to check the smell of your makeup; if it’s a cream based makeup, you may notice discoloration. When in doubt, toss it out. 2. Have you worn it in the past few months? As amazing as the thought of a drawer or multiple bags full of bright and fun makeup is, truth is, the clutter can slow down your process getting ready in the morning or for date night. If it’s a color that just doesn’t work for your skin tone, or you’re over the blue eye shadow game, you may want to ditch it. Pro tip: if it’s still good to use (i.e. not expired), consider asking a friend with a lighter or darker complexion if they want it. Just because it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it has to go straight to the garbage can! Sharing is caring, especially when makeup is involved! (Just remember never to share mascara or eyeliner.)
3. Is it damaged? If it’s a product that is just creating a mess (leaky foundations, crumbling eye shadows, etc.), then consider tossing it or swapping it to a new container that won’t make a mess. We’ve all been there when one product got all over our other makeup, making an even bigger mess. If you stopped using your Airbrush System because it seems to be clogged, take a few minutes to clean your stylus and get that thing back in action!
4. Is it in style? This is a pretty difficult question because we believe most makeup looks never go out of style. For instance, the winged eyeliner look is still popular for some and very outdated for others. If you don’t think a hot pink lip color is still in style (although we politely disagree with you), then toss it or give it to a friend. Studies show that whether it’s your wardrobe or makeup or food options on a menu, the more you have to sift through, the longer it takes and more stressful it can be.
5. Most importantly – does it look good on you and make you feel confident? We love wearing a powerful and bold red lip, but if it doesn’t suit your style or it doesn’t boost your confidence level, then toss it. Maybe a nude lipstick (like Incognito) is much more your style with bold and chunky jewelry. If that’s the case, get rid of looks that don’t work for you and rock the look that you feel most confident in. But remember, having a few shades of lips to choose from can easily take your look to new levels, even for just a fun low-key girl’s night!
