Makeup Tip: How to Apply Undereye Concealer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let us just get this out of the way – not all undereye concealer is created equal. Nor is the application process. Trust us – we’ve seen beautiful women do some pretty bizarre things when trying to cover up pimples or dark undereyes.

If you’re trying to hide dark circles or puffiness under your eyes, using concealer the wrong way can actually make them appear worse and draw attention to them.

So we’re here to help – here are some of our favorite makeup tips for applying concealer to your undereyes to help you look more awake and less tired:

  • Use foundation, then concealer. This may seem backwards, but trust us. The airbrush foundation will cover up a lot of the darkness, so then you’re able to better see how much concealer you need to use.

  • Don’t only apply concealer over the dark areas under your eyes. This will draw more attention and make the color difference look way too noticeable. A good rule of thumb is to draw a triangle with your concealer, pointing down, which will help you blend in the concealer better. Remember, you don’t want to replace the dark circles with a bright concealer; you want to conceal the area!

  • You should always apply your makeup in natural light to see what it really looks like and this is even truer for concealer. Again, people tend to use too much concealer in their efforts to cover up dark circles. Try a little, blend it in, then check it out in natural light before applying more.

  • If you’re a bit older, you may notice that your concealer tends to gather in the creases under your eyes. Don’t worry, it happens to (almost) all of us! Just use a tissue or your ring finger and gently dab (not rub) the excess product, so it doesn’t settle in the creases.

  • If you have puffy eyes (maybe not enough sleep), try one of our favorite beauty hacks by combining your highlighter, concealer and eye cream into one blend and apply by gently dabbing it under your eyes.

  • Learning how to use color correctors can be your new best friend! An orange or peach-colored concealer will be your best choice for covering up those dark circles.

While we are big fans of the airbrush concealer (linked above), we also know some of you prefer to use a regular liquid concealer, which comes in 5 shades to fit your exact skin tone.
