World War 3 fears: North Korea launches ICBM – South Korea FIRES missile back

NORTH Korea has launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), sparking a ferocious “precision strike” rocket response from South Korea.

North Korea launched the missile at around 3am local time (6pm GMT), sparking a furious response from Seoul.

Within minutes of North Korea’s ICBM launch, South Korea had fired its own missile launch in retaliation.

The North Korean missile was fired eastwards from the hermit state. The missile landed about 210km west of Japan’s Kyurokujima island, Tokyo said.

Japanese media reports the missile was in the air for 50 minutes – indicating a very high altitude flight path.

It travelled east for around 620 miles and to an altitude of around 2,500 miles before crashing into the Sea of Japan.

US leader Donald Trump was briefed on the missile while it was still in the air.

This late-night launch is rare, with most taking place during daylight hours.

A South Korean military official said earlier this evening: “We confirm that we have detected a North Korean ballistic missile launch. The missile is still travelling towards the direction to the East Sea, as we are monitoring right now.

“North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile early this morning from Pyongsong, South Pyongan to the east direction. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff is analyzing more details of the missile with the US side.”

An emergency meeting of Japan’s cabinet over conference call was scheduled for 3.30am local time (6.30pm GMT). A full cabinet meeting will take place this evening.

The Pentagon said it had detected a “probable” missile launch.

Spokesman Colonel Robert Manning said: “We detected a probable missile launch from North Korea. We are in the process of assessing the situation and will provide additional details when available.”

South Korean news agency Yonhap said: “North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile from South Pyongan Province early Wednesday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

“The missile flew eastward and the South Korean military is analyzing details with the US, it said.”

It is North Korea’s first missile launch since mid-September, when it fired a missile over Japan.

The missile launch comes just hours after US government sources warned a North Korea missile launch could take place in the “next few days”.

And earlier today North Korea issued a sabre-rattling statement in a state-run propaganda newspaper.

The mouthpiece for Kim’s one-party government said: “The army and people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will surely accelerate the final victory in the standoff with the US.

“The US is driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of war by mobilising huge aggression forces while tightening the sanctions upon the DPRK.”

This is a breaking story, more to follow…

North Korea on Tuesday fired a missile that traveled about 1000 km before crashing into the Sea of Japan, the Pentagon said in a statement.

The defense agency said that initial assessments indicated the missile was an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM. In a news conference, Japan’s defense minister also said it seemed to be an ICBM.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered an emergency meeting of Cabinet ministers following the launch, North Korea’s first since Sept. 15, when one flew over northern Japan and into the Pacific Ocean.

“A missile was launched from North Korea which appears to have landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone,” Abe’s office tweeted. “As soon as new information comes in, we will let you know.” The South Korean military conducted a “precision missile-firing drill” as a response to the launch, a South Korean military official told NBC.

“We are working with our interagency partners on a more detailed assessment of the launch,” a Pentagon spokesman said. “The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America, our territories or our allies.”

“Our commitment to the defense of our allies, including the Republic of Korea and Japan, in the face of these threats, remains ironclad,” he added. “We remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies from any attack or provocation.”

The missile was fired from Sain Ni, North Korea, the Pentagon said.

South Korea and the United States are analyzing the details of the launch, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff told the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Earlier on Tuesday Reuters reported that U.S. government experts believed the regime was likely to launch a missile “within days.”

The launch comes on the heels of Trump’s Nov. 20 announcement that the U.S. is designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

North Korea Fires a Ballistic Missile, in a Further Challenge to Trump

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea fired a ballistic missile on Wednesday morning for the first time in more than two months, defying demands from President Trump to halt its weapons programs and raising the stakes in an increasingly tense standoff with the United States and its allies.

The unidentified ballistic missile took off from Pyongsong, a town northeast of Pyongyang, at 3:17 a.m. and flew east toward the Sea of Japan. It appeared to land in waters in which Japan claims special exploration rights.

Six minutes after the launch, South Korea conducted its own missile test off its east coast, demonstrating its ability to strike North Korean missile launching sites, the South’s military said in a statement.

Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, told reporters that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had called a meeting of his national security council.

“We strongly urge North Korea to change their policy as there will be no bright future for North Korea unless they resolve such issues as the

abductions, nuclear program and missiles,” Mr. Suga said.

There was no immediate reaction from the Trump administration.

Unlike in previous launches over the summer, when the missiles flew over Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido, the government did not issue cellphone alerts to warn citizens.

Nighttime launches are not common, but North Korea has conducted night missile tests before. It launched an intercontinental ballistic missile at night on July 28.

The new missile firing came as North Korea has increased the frequency and daring of its missile tests, sending two missiles over Japan in August and September, while demonstrating technical progress that suggested it had developed the ability to strike the continental United States.

In a Sept. 19 speech at the United Nations, Mr. Trump warned that if North Korea threatened the United States or its allies, Washington would have “no choice but to totally destroy North Korea,” and he mockingly referred to its leader, Kim Jong-un, as “rocket man.”

The North Korean leader responded by calling Mr. Trump “a mentally deranged U.S. dotard,” and his foreign minister later warned that Mr. Kim could order the test of a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific.

In the wake of a Sept. 3 underground nuclear test — the sixth by North Korea — the United Nations Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions against the country.

In the nearly three months since that test, as leaders of North Korea and the United States have exchanged insults, the world has braced itself for another show of force by the North.

While in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September, North Korea’s foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho, said that Mr. Kim was considering a hydrogen bomb test of unprecedented scale over the Pacific Ocean.

North Korea has persisted in its nuclear weapons and missile development despite nine rounds of sanctions that the Security Council has imposed since its first nuclear test in 2006.

The country has also made strides in its ballistic missile program since Mr. Kim took power in late 2011. It tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, in July, the second of which demonstrated the potential to reach the mainland United States.

Washington is applying what it calls “maximum pressure and sanctions” to stop North Korea from reaching the stage where it would be able to deliver a nuclear warhead on its ICBMs. But Mr. Kim says his country will conduct more missile tests in the Pacific Ocean to hone its capabilities.
