Obama and Xi: all smiles as ‘veteran cadres’ reunite in Beijing

The former US president’s visit comes at a time when the Trump administration was attacking China’s economic practices

Former US president Barack Obama has met with Chinese president Xi Jinping in Beijing just weeks after Donald Trump made a state visit to China.

The two were all smiles during the meeting and Chinese media fawned over Obama and Xi, dubbing the pair “veteran cadres”, a term typically applied to retired Communist officials. But in a sign of the diplomatic sensitivity, Chinese state media reported on the event in a single terse article.

“Xi made a positive appraisal of Obama’s efforts in promoting China-US relations during his presidency,” according to a report by state news agency Xinhua.

“China and the United States have an important responsibility to safeguard world peace and stability,” Xi said according to paraphrased remarks.

Obama reportedly encouraged developing relations with China and pledged to continue to be involved in US-China ties. The visit was part of a trip that includes stops in India and France.

The obvious warmth between the two was in contrast to their sometimes fraught relationship during Obama’s tenure, who championed a “pivot to Asia” strategy meant to increase US involvement in the region. Although relations were consistently cast as positive, Obama was critical of China expansion in the South China Sea and its human rights record.

Obama’s trip also came at a time when Trump’s administration was attacking China’s economic practices. The US this week formally told the World Trade Organisation it opposes classifying China as a market economy due to widespread government subsidies. The move could lead to increased tariffs on Chinese goods.

Despite repeatedly criticising China’s trade practices, Trump claims to maintain cordial personal ties with the Chinese leader.

Trump has said he and Xi have a “very good relationship” and has described his rapport with the Chinese leader as “the best relationship of any president-president”.

Abbas “warned categorically that taking such a step would lead to the destruction of the peace process and would bring the region into an uncontrollable situation,”  according to his spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh. On Wednesday Abbas ordered his foreign minister to demand the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation hold emergency sessions regarding the possible US measures.

As of Saturday night, Trump had not signed a waiver delaying the move of the embassy by another six months, and he has only until Monday to do so. A stream of media reports in recent days have indicated that the president intends to declare in a speech within days that he considers Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital, and that he may say he is instructing his team to prepare to move the embassy.

Abbas, according to the official PA news Wafa, told the leaders in a series of phone calls Saturday of the dangers of such a move, and urged them to intervene with Trump.

Abbas called Egypt’s Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Tunisian President Béji Caid Sibsi, the emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The PA delegation further said that were the US to make any such moves, the Palestinians would declare that the US could no longer be considered “an honest broker” for any Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Channel 10 News reported, saying the meeting took place at the White House.

Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and peace process point man, is scheduled to discuss the administration’s approach to peacemaking in a rare appearance at the Saban Forum in DC on Sunday.
