PLUSUS President Donald Trump and his administration are “begging for nuclear war,” North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Saturday. Trump is “staging an extremely dangerous nuclear gamble on the Korean peninsula,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a written statement that also calls Trump a “nuclear demon” and a “disruptor of global peace.” The comments came ahead of a joint US-South Korean military drill, scheduled to begin Monday. About 12,000 US military personnel and 230 planes are expected to participate in the drill, known as Vigilant Ace. North Korean officials made similar comments last month. A furious commentary published in a state-run newspaper said Trump had displayed his “true colors as an old lunatic, mean trickster and human reject” during his visit to the Korean Peninsula. Days later, Trump placed North Korea on the list of state sponsors of terrorism; the country was removed from that list in 2008 by George W. Bush.

The North’s latest statement also comes days after North Korea test-fired a brand new intercontinental ballistic missile, which experts said shows a major advance in technology and threat. After the missile was tested, Trump tweeted Wednesday that “additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea.” The United States has been trying to get other countries, especially China, to squeeze North Korea’s economy to make Kim back down from developing his country’s nuclear weapons program. After this week’s launch, a North Korean official told CNN Pyongyang was not interested in diplomacy with the US until it had fully demonstrated its nuclear deterrent capabilities. Reiterating past remarks, the official said one step was to conduct an above-ground nuclear detonation or “large-scale hydrogen bomb” test. The other was the “testing of a long-range ICBM,” the implication being this had been achieved with the most recent launch.

MCMASTER: ‘POTENTIAL’ FOR WAR WITH N. KOREA IS ‘INCREASING EVERY DAY’

‘There’s not much time left’

The likelihood of war breaking out with North Korea is “increasing every day,” warned America’s national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, Saturday.

McMaster spoke at the Reagan Presidential Library, where he cautioned that the threat America faces from Kim Jong Un’s nuclear arsenal is growing. 

“Every time he conducts a missile launch and nuclear test, he gets better,” McMaster said. ”And whether it’s a success or failure isn’t as important as understanding that over the years, he’s been learning from failures, improving, and thereby increasing his threat to all of us.”

“We are in a race, really, we are in a race to be able to solve this problem, not just us, right, but the United States, all of our allies and partners,” McMaster continued. ”There are ways to address this problem short of our conflict, but it is a race because he’s getting closer and closer and there’s not much time left.”

McMaster said that of all the threats America faces, North Korea is the most dangerous. “The greatest immediate threat to the United States and to the world is the threat caused by the rogue regime in North Korea and continued efforts to develop a long-range nuclear capability.”

The former general spoke with Fox News host Bret Baier. Here’s a transcript:  

BAIER: “So let me get a little specific on North Korea, we are being told that the ICBM, the most recent launch, broke up on reentry. Is North Korea having trouble on that re-entry step and thereby right now the U.S. overall is not at threat from their ballistic missiles?”

McMASTER: “Well, it’ll take some time to assess each of these missile launches but what is clear is that every time, every time he conducts a missile launch and nuclear test, he gets better. And whether it’s a success or failure isn’t as important as understanding that over the years, he’s been learning from failures, improving, and thereby increasing his threat to all of us.”

BAIER: “So the potential of war with North Korea increased since the latest launch?”

McMASTER: “I think it’s increasing every day, which means that we are in a race, really, we are in a race to be able to solve this problem, not just us, right, but the United States, all of our allies and partners. As we know, China has tremendous coercive economic power over North Korea. I mean, you can’t shoot a missile without fuel, right, and so there are — there are ways to address this problem short of our conflict, but it is a race because he’s getting closer and closer and there’s not much time left.”
