Born-Again Nick Foles Beats Syncretist Tom Brady in Super Bowl Blowout!

Football’s biggest night is finally upon us! The New England Patriots faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night for Super Bowl LII in what was reported as one of the coldest games in history. The battle for the Lombardi Trophy kicked off at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The Eagles held strong and defeated the Patriots with final score of 41-33.

Many people may not realize the possible spiritual dynamics in play here. The New England Patriots quarterback, a symbol of success, fame and fortune, believes in everything. According to The New York Times’ Mark Leibovich, Brady’s faith falls on a more spiritual path since he doesn’t believe in a specific God or religious practice. Rather, he has a mix of everything. (Source) This faith structure has a name in fact: Syncretism.

Syncretism (/ˈsɪŋkrətɪzəm/) is the combining of different beliefs, while blending practices of various schools of thought. Syncretism involves the merging or assimilation of several originally discrete traditions, especially in the theology and mythology of religion, thus asserting an underlying unity and allowing for an inclusive approach to other faiths.

Nick Foles on the other hand takes a much more decisive stand on God and faith. “I want to be a pastor in a high school,” Foles said Thursday. “It’s on my heart. I took a leap of faith last year and signed up to take classes at seminary. I wanted to continue to learn and challenge my faith. It’s a challenge because you are writing papers that are biblically correct. You want to impact people’s hearts.”

Foles is part of a team that has a strong Christian brotherhood. MVP contender Carson Wentz has been outspoken about his faith and many players spend a lot of time together in prayer, studying the Bible and sharing devotionals.

Foles was one of the study leaders during his first stint in Philadelphia and has become a go-to source for younger guys. Left guard Stefen Wisniewksi also plans to become a pastor after his career ends. (Source)

With all of this in mind could there have been something deeper to consider when placing bets on who would win this year’s Super Bowl? It’s difficult to know, really, especially when we consider the plight of Tim Tebow. However there is no doubt that a born-again Christian beat out a Syncretist in the greatest football contest of the year. I watched the entire game. It was a humiliating defeat for Brady with the only sack of the game (against Brady) along with the only turnover costing the Patriots their sixth Super Bowl win.

And as I read the many comment sections in online forums during the game it was clear that people genuinely desired a slice of humble pie for Brady. And maybe it’s time for Tom Brady to take a knee… and look up to heaven… to Jesus?
