The United States has just handed Russia their “just cause” for war against America!

American strikes on pro-Assad forces in the Deir Ezzor province of Syria have decimated hundreds of mercenary fighters. America claims this was self-defense after one lone tank fired upon them. It’s a strange story, to think that just one tank firing on them could lead to a massive airstrike series with such high mortality.

Some reports are claiming that between 600 and 700 Russian operatives were killed by the American attack. The Kremlin is neither confirming nor denying those numbers. Russia claims they keep no data on the mercenary activities of their citizens. That, also is a strange claim, coming from a nation with extensive intelligence operations around the world. It is unlikely that this claim is true, so the full ramifications of why they would lie about this may yet come to light.

Does anyone actually believe that Russia will not retaliate against the US for this slaughter? Russia, under Vladimir Putin, has made dramatic examples of people attacking their own citizens in the past. Even if these were all mercenaries who knew the risks they were taking, Russia is not likely to ignore their losses.

These mercenaries were essentially paid allies to the official Russian forces. Each supports the regime of Bashar Al Assad. It is not even a stretch to think they coordinated closely with each other in tactical matters.

Let’s assume the painfully obvious for just a moment. Either…
A: America was not defending itself, but seeking to destabilize military assets valued by Assad and Putin.
…Or,
B: Russia encouraged this proxy force of theirs to carry out a mission which the US ensured would fail, and they denied knowledge of any detail on these contractors in order to keep their own hands clean.

Either way, America has just given a very wet, ugly bloody nose to the Kremlin’s interests.

Can we honestly think that no backlash will come from Russia’s armed forces? Of course not. America has supplied Russia with “just cause” to retaliate. The war started years ago, and soon it will escalate again.
