Suspect killed breaking into home—of a federal agent (VIDEO)

An attempted burglary was thwarted early Monday morning in Pinecrest, Florida, when the homeowner — a high ranking Miami federal agent — opened fire at the suspect.

Authorities said Maria Otero, the branch chief of the Miami office of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, killed Robert Young III after he broke into her home around 1:30 am, local media reported.

According to a statement, Miami-Dade police said a preliminary investigation found that the victims where asleep when and were awoke by the sound of shattering glass — what turned out to be the glass on a sliding door.

Otero, 55, was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard practice, local media reported. She has been in law enforcement for 25 years.

Young, 28, had a history of arrests in the Miami area and was convicted in 2013 for grand theft, local media reports.

It’s unclear the circumstances in which Otero opened fire as the incident is under investigation. Both federal and state authorities are investigating the shooting.

However, under the state’s self-defense laws, a resident can use deadly force while presuming any intruder — armed or not — poses a deadly threat, local media reported.
