Video: Police Kick Hungry Homeless Man and Customer Who Bought Him Food Out of McDonald’s

Not all heroes wear capes.

A Facebook video showing a homeless man being escorted off the premises of a Myrtle Beach, SC, McDonald’s after a customer bought him food has gone viral, and is sparking widespread outrage.

On Wednesday morning, Yossi Gallo invited the homeless man to McDonald’s with him so he could buy him a meal.

“I waved him down, and I said, ‘Hey, are you hungry?’ and he said, ‘Yes,’” Gallo said in an interview with WMBF News. “So I went in there with him, and as soon as we went inside, the lady at the register says, ‘You’re not getting food.’ She tells him he’s not getting food.”

Gallo says he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, so he started recording the incident on his phone.

“You guys suck. He didn’t even ask me for food. I brought him from outside. You guys suck,” Gallo can be heard saying in the video.

In the video, Gallo can be heard arguing with management and a police officer who was called to the scene to issue a trespass warning for the homeless man as requested by the McDonald’s restaurant.

The video speaks for itself.

Warning: profanity

Myrtle Beach Police Capt. Joey Crosby told KPTV via email officers went to the restaurant after an employee called to report a man was in the parking lot asking people for money. But both Gallo and the homeless man vehemently deny that accusation in the video.

When the officer arrived at the restaurant, the employee told police the man was inside the restaurant, according to Crosby. That employee also requested a trespass warning be issued and the person asked to leave the premises.

Joel Pellicci Jr., the owner of the McDonald’s, said this has been an ongoing problem in a statement to WMBF:

“At my restaurant, the goal is to provide our customers with a positive and welcoming experience each time they visit. Unfortunately, the individual in this video has a history of disruptive behavior and has been asked to leave by management and police on several occasions.”

But…was the man a problem during this particular incident? It sure doesn’t seem like it, going by what we see in the video. The man was quietly sitting and eating his meal when the police arrived.

Gallo and the homeless man were forced to leave the restaurant. They were not permitted to finish their food or even bring it with them, in what can only be viewed as a spiteful demonstration of control on the part of the restaurant management and police who were involved. What harm would there have been in letting them take their meals with them – meals that Gallo paid for?

Gallo invited the homeless man to go with him to get food elsewhere.

“You know what you’re doing is wrong,” Gallo tells the officer in the McDonald’s parking lot. “You know that already. Deep inside you, you know that.”

When asked why he helped the homeless man, Gallo said he has “a place in my heart for homeless people and people in need”, reports Newsweek:

“I think that a lot of my blessings in life, with things that I was successful in, I think that comes from helping people because I love to give, I love to help others,” he said. “If someone feels that I’m doing this to show off, then by all means please show off…why don’t you do that as well, and if everyone does that, we’ll have a beautiful world, wouldn’t we?”

So far, it appears the majority of people who have seen the video are in support of Gallo. As of the time of this writing, the video has been viewed over 60 million times, has been shared 1,345,712 times, and has over 215,000 comments. Some comments have called for a boycott of McDonald’s, and many have praised the man for his compassion.

The Facebook page for that McDonald’s location has also been flooded with over 10,000 one-star reviews following this incident, reports KPTV.
