Multiple Fatalities After Pedestrian Bridge Collapses Near Florida International University
A new pedestrian bridge scheduled to open near the campus of Florida International University collapsed Thursday, with Florida Highway Patrol officials confirming multiple fatalities.
Chopper 6 is over the scene, where at least two people could be seen taken to ambulances while others were being treated by rescue crews, while at least two cars could be seen pinned by massive slabs of concrete. NBC 6′s Andrea Cruz, who was near the school, reports that the bridge has completely collapsed.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue has treated a total of five patients so far, with one being transported as a trauma alert to Kendall Regional Hospital.
The 174 foot long bridge, scheduled to open to the public in early 2019, crossed Southwest 8th Street near 109th Avenue and was built with the purpose of allowing students living across the busy roadway to cross safely.
The bridge was part of a $19.4 million project grant, partially paid for from the Department of Transportation, and had been hailed in recent weeks for finishing ahead of schedule.
The 30 foot wide bridge – with the main span weighing around 950 tons – was set to allow for those on bikes to share the bridge with those on foot, was scheduled to be illuminated at night and feature a canopy to protect those crossing from the elements.

This is NOT good. How many more will be doing the same? You see folks, we here in Canada had these so called GRADE 8 STRUCTURAL BOLTS which were made in China that even had the GRADE 8 markings on them. These bolts we had were to be torqued to 120,000 PSI, yet we had bolt after bolt shear around 70,000. Obviously these bolts were NOT grade 8 structural bolts they were just CHEAP FAKE MADE IN CHINA CRAP STEAL BOLTS WHICH WERE GOING TO KILL SOMEONE SOME DAY AND NOW GUESS WHAT JUST HAPPENED?…Best check those bolts you used. Oh and check the rebar as well, it too if made in China or India can NOT be trusted.
GOOD point and something I have been pointing out for YEARS about China. DO NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS. They are CHEAP stuff.
All the stuff you buy from them wear out, peel, break, etc. LL Bean and Cabelas known for rugged quality products but their pants (made in China) fray, rip apart very easily after about a year.
Their new-fangled t-shirts also wear out fray, develop holes in them, etc., within a year or two. In another words, they don’t last at all.
Products year ago that were made in Mexico, Paskistan, etc., last for years with little or no wear shown.
China makes these silicone spatulas and I notice bugs and RATS like to chew on them almost immediately. I had to throw away several of them.
But I notice a spatula – American Made, in my draw over 60 years ago and not a BITE in it. So, what are these CHEAP communist Chinese doing to it. Is it even silicone or something else??
