6 Reminders for Single Tasking — Luminess

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Once upon a time we were praised for being multitaskers. Somewhere down the line, things shifted and we became too reliant on doing multiple things at once instead of truly focusing on one thing.

In an effort to get back to the good ole days, or simply just paying more attention to our tasks and loved ones around us, we have put together this little guide on single tasking, to help you get better.

So instead of trying to catch up on your Twitter feed while applying your airbrush foundation, try doing things separately and truly enjoying them. Here are some tips for single tasking to help you get acquainted with this new (or is it old?) concept:

  1. Eat all your meals just eating. This probably sounds painfully impossible, but instead of reading your social media feeds or a magazine, just spend time with your meal. Grab a friend or co-worker to eat with you; we dare you!
  2. Declutter all around you. Whether that means your DVR or your desk at work, clear out any of the true and real life distractions. That way you can work on that important business proposal instead of cleaning up a stack of papers on your desk.
  3. Listen to people. We get it — conversations are two-sided and they should be. But instead of formulating your response when someone is talking, just sit back and listen. Your response will form when it’s time, but try active listening. It will do wonders for all the relationships in your life.
  4. Take your TV time seriously. You may be thinking you don’t have time for TV and if so, good for you! But if you do watch TV, try watching your favorite show or movie without doing stuff throughout it, which means responding to emails, scrolling through Instagram, pausing to have a conversation, etc.
  5. Enjoy your rituals. This one kind of goes with #4. If you enjoy watching a weekly show or cooking every week night, try to focus on just doing that one task or ritual instead of trying to pack tomorrow’s lunch while you’re cooking tonight’s dinner. It’s a small change, but it will help you get back to enjoying something that you used to love so much!
  6. We saved the hardest one for last: keep only one browser window open on your computer at a time. We know, this may be physically impossible, but give it a go and let us know how you do!
