From stockpiling food and other essentials to fortifying our homes to make them more defensible to setting up a bug out location and different routes for getting there, preparing for a major disaster means that we have to take desperate measures.

Just like how we take desperate measures to respond to a potential disaster or crises, the American government does the exact same thing.

In fact, since the 1950s, the White House has continually drafted the PEADs, or Presidential Emergency Action Documents, which are a list of plans to be implemented and enforced in the wake of a major, apocalyptic-level disaster.

The PEADs, which are adjusted with each new Presidential administration, remain highly classified. The Brennan Center for Justice think tank was able to look at five hundred of more than 6,000 PEAD pages for instance.

These pages, among other information we have available, offer a glimpse into the desperate measures the American government is prepared to take in the event of a major disaster.

Here are desperate measures that the United States government is secretly resorting to in preparation for the following disasters:

Nuclear War

In the pre-9/11 era, the primary focus of the PEADs was on preparing the United States for a nuclear war. The chance of a terrorist organization or an enemy of the United States obtaining and detonating a nuclear weapon on American soil still remains a very grave threat.

The purpose of American government plans following a nuclear detonation is to ensure continuity of government, essentially to make sure the United States will never become leaderless and can continue fighting a war.

Today, the United States government has what is called National Response Scenario Number One, which would be enacted in the event of a nuclear device going off on American soil.

When enacted, all borders would immediately be closed down by the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, all commercial air traffic will become grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration once it enacts the SCATANA (Security Control of Air Traffic and Air Navigation Aids) plan. Only Department of Defense flights would be authorized.

The military will then be placed at DEFCON 1, the highest readiness alert level. The military, NSA, CIA, FBI, and local law enforcement groups would then work together to conduct a massive investigation to determine two things:

1. If any other nuclear devices could go off in the country

2. Who was responsible for the first blast

Such an event would also surely result in a major lockdown of the country as well. All areas affected by the blast and areas believed to be under threat would be placed under martial law. American military and law enforcement units would confiscate firearms

The supply chains would also be shut down as incoming flights and shipments ground to a halt and the supply trucks stop running, resulting in major supply shortages all over the country.

EMP Attacks

An EMP, or electromagnetic pulse, would target America’s infrastructure by producing a huge wave of energy that would cause dramatic voltage in electric systems.

This would simultaneously knock out electric grids and virtually anything that runs on a computer. Cell towers, internet service, most car engines, transformers, and backup generators would be knocked out in an instant.

If detonated high enough and if the blast was powerful enough, an EMP attack would have the potential to knock down the power grid from coast-to-coast.

America would be thrown almost all the way back to the 1800s overnight, and a full recovery would take years, if not decades.

So how is the government preparing for an EMP attack?

That’s actually a good question. Most believe that the government’s defense against an EMP blast is weak at best.

While the Trump Administration passed the Coordination National Resilience to Electromagnetic Pulse act in 2019 to increase research on EMP vulnerabilities in the countries, actual defense measures taken have been minimal.

When the Biden Administration invested over thirteen billion dollars into the US energy grid, the money went into improving the reliability of the power grid and defensive measures against cyberattacks, but not against EMP attacks.

If an EMP attack were to be enacted, we can expect a similar response to what the government would do in the event of an EMP attack, only perhaps more drastic.

Flights would become grounded as, but the entire country would almost certainly be placed on major lockdowns and martial law would be declared nationwide while an investigation into the perpetrator of the EMP would commence

Supply Shortages

The threat of a major supply shortage in the United States is very real.

We saw this in the pandemic, in which we saw a major shortage of basic necessities and medical equipment.

This is why the US government has a Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), which is one of the reserves the country uses for strategic and economic purposes. The SNS is a massive stockpile of petroleum, medical equipment, and additional materials that the government can draw upon when there is a major disruption to supply.

While the exact contents of the SNS stockpile are kept a secret, it is known that the total value of the stockpile is over $8 billion. While that may sound a lot, the truth is that the SNS was largely understocked to respond to the pandemic properly.

It’s also likely that the government would be undersupplied in an event to respond to a future oil shortage. The Biden administration also drew millions of barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves last year in response to the rising gas prices, an act that many politicians and leaders over the country called desperate and unnecessary. Officials have now stated that it will take years to have those reserves refilled.

In short, a major disaster of apocalyptic proportions in the United States would result in an apocalyptic-level response from the government.

But is the government truly prepared to respond to a major threat? We’ve seen how the government has plans to initiate a nationwide shutdown in the result of a nuclear attack, and this would almost certainly happen following a major EMP attack as well.

But we’ve also seen how the American government’s stockpile of medicine and oil is vastly understocked as well. So how well could the U.S. government actually respond?

At the end of the day, we won’t know until such an apocalyptic-level happens. But don’t count on the government to come rescue you. That’s why it’s important to keep the focus on yourself and on your family. Make your own stockpile and have your own emergency preparations ready to go.
