   Anthony Weiner did it, and Michael Vick did it just last week. Both men prematurely tweeted out a picture of themselves that has led to media speculation and an outcry of public opinion. While we know what happened to Anthony Weiner, we are still waiting to hear more from Michael Vick.

   For those unfamiliar with the situation, last week Vick tweeted out a Rockwellian picture of himself and his daughter at their kitchen table. When observant viewers noticed a box of Milk-Bones on the table, they wanted to know if the man who spent 23 months in federal prison on dog fighting charges was now a dog owner.

   Finally, it can be confirmed that the answer to that question is “yes.”

   When asked, Vick, despite saying that he’d prefer to focus on the Eagles, admitted through his publicist Chris Shigas that he is indeed a dog owner again. He issued this statement:

   “I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.:

   Shigas goes on to say that “the Eagles are in first place and Michael is focused on his job.”

   Vick’s dog ownership certainly doesn’t come without controversy. When Vick was released from prison in July of 2009, he was placed on probation for a period of three years. At that time, he was prohibited from having a dog. Now that he is off probation and legally allowed to own a dog again, there are many people who are taking issue with Vick’s decision to become a dog owner again.

   Sport Illustrated writer and author of The Lost Dog: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption Jim Gorant said, “While I appreciate the sentiment of Michael Vick’s public statement released this week, I don’t believe that he should be allowed to own a dog.”

   Michael Vick has a new dog: this is the headline that stirred much talk over the weekend when Philadelphia Eagles’ Quarterback, Michael Vick, tweeted a picture suggesting there may be a new member in the family.

   Michael Vick has a new dog: this is the headline that stirred much talk over the weekend when Philadelphia Eagles’ Quarterback, Michael Vick, tweeted a picture suggesting there may be a new member in the family.

   Although it has not been confirmed from either Vick or his Twitter that there is a new dog, Saturday’s photo reveals a clue suggesting otherwise. The picture shows Vick and his daughter working at a table; he is watching a football game on his iPad while she is doing homework. The picture looks like any other typical father-daughter bonding moment, but the red box of Milk Bone dog treats sitting on the table on the right side of the picture caused social media buzz.

   However minutes later (possibly realizing the dog treats made an appearance), Vick tweeted the same picture minus the box of dog biscuits.

   Vick served 23 months in federal prison for pleading guilty to participating in a dog fighting ring in 2007. He was a member of a group called “Bad Newz Kennels,” which housed and trained pit bulls to fight against each other in gambled matches. Vick also hosted several of these dog fighting matches at his Virginia property. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, over 50 dogs were either injured or killed participating in the fights.

   After his release from federal prison, Vick was banned from owning a dog for three years. Vick spoke out on July 17 appearing on Piers Morgan’s show by saying despite his past he would like to get a dog for his kids. The ban expired in August, therefore allowing Vick to own a dog legally.

   Opinions on Vick owning a dog seems to be split. Some feel that he should never own a dog because of his history with animal cruelty, and others feel he has changed and should have a second chance.

   I emailed Mr. HSUS (I wasn’t vulgar but did drive home a point) and this is the spin I received back in the form of of an email: We received confirmation from the media that Michael Vick’s family did acquire a dog. That happened without The HSUS’s knowledge or participation. Vick expressed an interest in getting a dog two years ago for his children once his probation ended — five years after his terrible crimes came to light. We knew he’d be legally allowed to acquire an animal after his period of probation elapsed, and if they were going to bring an animal into their family, we urged him and his wife to go to a shelter or rescue group to save a dog and give an animal a second chance. We expect that Vick will continue to be in the media glare, and there will be a focus on his family’s proper care for the dog. We are paying

   attention to this too, but it’s not a major animal welfare issue. Instead, when it comes to the protection of dogs, we are focusing on further strengthening the legal framework against dogfighting, building community-based programs that instill respect for animals and deter young people from going down the dead-end road of dogfighting, promoting adoption and driving down euthanasia rates, and cracking down on puppy mills. Those are the urgent battles that need the full attention of animal advocates. No group works harder, or has a more effective record on dogfighting, than HSUS. Of course, Michael Vick would never have been arrested or gone to jail without HSUS driving the enactment of the federal law against animal fighting.
