Reiki is for the Birds

This morning as I was working at my computer I heard a muffled bang.

Turning I saw that a junco had hit the glass storm door, and was lying on my doorstep. She had one wing half outstretched and I feared that it might be broken. And I was not the only one interested in her—my cat Cougar was watching the downed bird with a great deal of intensity. Normally he does not stalk the birds, but this one had practically landed at his feet.

Hoping to minimize the bird’s stress, I did not open the door. Instead I evaluated her from inside the house. By now she had righted herself and both wings were folded neatly against her body, but her beak was open and she was breathing rapidly. I sensed that she was very dazed from the impact, and made the decision to offer her Reiki energy healing from a distance rather than going out and picking her up. Making that choice was riskier for her in the sense that one of the neighborhood cats could decide to stroll by at any moment, but it felt like the right thing to do.

As the Reiki energy flowed the little junco gradually eased into a crouching position, despite Cougar’s eyes practically boring a hole in the door. Her breathing slowed, and I was uncertain if that was a good sign, so I asked my guides if she needed a Bridge of Light and received a “no.” They felt that she had a good chance at recovery.

Still sending Reiki, I took a few photos. The junco never turned to look our way, although I sensed that she was aware that Cougar and I were there.

Ten minutes quietly passed before I felt the Reiki energy slow, then stop. The junco emerged from her healing trance, and turning her head she took a good, long look at Cougar before flying off to a nearby tree. Her flight was straight and true, with no sign of injury.

Reiki is for the birds…and everyone else!
