Pets as Gifts: Do not give animals for Christmas

A recent note from the Ohio Attorney General’s office warned against “puppy scams;” online attempts to steal money from those hoping to buy a puppy that probably does not even exist. Scammers increase their activity at this time of year, presumably because there are more people considering buying pets as Christmas gifts.

It is an easy solution: Do not buy an animal as a Christmas present.

Tempting as it may be to place a cute puppy or kitten under the tree with a big red bow tied around its collar, the joy is too often short-lived for the giver, the receiver, and especially the innocent animal.

Once the novelty wears off, reality sets in. Pets are expensive — food, veterinary care, boarding, grooming, bedding and other accessories are just the financial concerns; the time element is crucial as well — exercise and socialization are essential to keep a pet happy and healthy.

Is the person responsible enough, physically capable and do they live in a home where pets are allowed? Are they old enough to understand? Young enough to be able to care for, and clean up after, a pet?

There is too much to consider to risk the wellbeing of an animal by making it a gift; particularly when one considers pets have personalities that may not always match well with the personality of someone receiving it as a gift.

It is always best to let the potential pet owner have as much hand in the decision-making as possible. If the person has already made clear they want and are able to handle a pet, then a stuffed animal under the tree, with a gift tag promising a trip to the local animal shelter to meet some adoptable animals, may be the best gift.

Pets add much more to our lives than we do to theirs. It is natural to want to give that kind of experience as a gift. But do not take the easy route. Do not open up the possibility that an animal may end up lonely, neglected … or back at the animal shelter for the sake of a few minutes’ excitement on Christmas.
