I awoke on this long-dreaded inauguration day of a 45th President of the United States (whose platform I do not support), with the joyful memory of a powerful dream.

I dreamt that I was going horseback riding with a group of people. Somehow I ended up on the lead horse—a mare—who I seem to recall was named something like Dudley.

Rather than being in a saddle I was sitting inside some kind of straw ring on top of the horse, which meant that my legs were not in contact with her sides and there were no reins. I had no way to physically direct her, but as we navigated the trail I realized that she could feel what I wanted, and trusted that she knew the way.

Once I trusted Dudley and communicated with her through heart the straw ring vanished, and I was riding bareback. There were still no reins. I was now able to use my legs to change direction, but doing so seemed clumsy and unnecessary.

When our group reached our destination we turned around to go back home. Still in the lead, suddenly Dudley and I were cantering—with a difference. I was not sitting on Dudley’s back, instead, I was standing with my right foot on her back and my left was seemingly standing on air. It was like a trick riding act, but with an invisible horse. Together the invisible horse, Dudley and I moved in unison. If Dudley began to drift all I had to do was communicate with my heart and all three became a team once again. There was no fear—only strength and joy. I also realized in that moment that I felt no physical pain either (lingering effects of accidents).

After many years in Western riding I know that some running horses will not be stopped without a fight when headed back to the barn. Not so in this case. All I had to do was ask, and we slowed and stopped. I hugged Dudley and thanked her over and over again for the amazing experience.

In conversation later with the owner of the stable I asked about Dudley and was told that she could always be trusted to take care of her riders, especially the children.

When I awoke I realized that this was no ordinary dream, this was a very meaning-filled gift from Spirit, and I felt joyful. I had received guidance for my work and my life.

The task of the healer is to stand with a foot in both worlds—on one side is consensual/physical reality (Dudley) and on the other is the realm of Spirit (invisible horse). When you stand in balance between the two you are holding sacred space, and that space is outside of time or physical place. It is there that healing and shift happens.

Together we are strong!
