Rogue the Crow and the Birdbath

I went outside this morning to water the garden and rinse out the fountain and the birdbath. The messiest area is always the deep birdbath, not because so many songbirds use it, but because Rogue the crow has claimed it for his personal use.

Not only does he love to take a bath in its spacious depths, he’s big into personal hydration with lots of sipping and dipping of whatever bread and pastry goodies he scores in the neighborhood. This means that over the course of a day the clear water becomes a cloudy white, and its surface gets greasy from the oils.

I missed my cleanup duties yesterday due to too many things that needed my immediate attention, so it was particularly icky looking today. Rogue was glaring at me accusingly as he sat ON the birdbath. I did not need to be an animal communicator to know what he was saying.

I happened to have one of cat Manitou’s fresh rodent presents for Rogue’s dining pleasure, which I waved at him enticingly. Rogue did not move. I told him I was going to put it in the usual offering spot by the curb, but still he sat. Even after I put his tidbit down he remained at his post on the birdbath. As a result, a warring neighbor crow snatched the juicy morsel before Rogue could get there. Apparently I am under close observation.

Rogue stayed on the birdbath as I approached with the hose, not leaving it until I was within a few feet of him. Even then he did not go far. With feathers slightly puffed out he paced back and forth about three feet away, clearly impatient for HIS birdbath to be ready.

As soon as it was clean and filled, he hopped up and began sipping away. Next it was bath time.

I did not get a thank you or a tip. Apparently cats are not the only ones who have staff!
