Tucson Arizona Catalina Mountains afternoon plein air painting

I painted this at dusk as the light descended on the mountains in Tucson Arizona. Painting something like this in plein air you need to prepare ahead of time. I carefully drew the shapes and started painting any shadows that I saw. I mixed piles of paint that I thought that i might use, although I had to do some adjusting. The shadows of the mountains I lengthened as the light was going down and kept putting in the shadows as I saw them. I could tell which places the paint would be lighter and knew that the mountains would be the lightest. The paint on the rocks was the last to go in.
