Mad the Martian releases new LP 'Blast Off'

The rock trio known as Mad the Martian have released their debut LP record, “Blast Off.” The album is comprised of 13 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 55 minutes, making for a powerful and plentiful introduction to this upbeat, ingenious and impeccably skilled band. The album has been released on the MtM Records music label. A contemporary alternative rock record with elements of both indie and classic rock, “Blast Off” by Mad the Martian is catchy, arresting, beautifully harmonic and endlessly fun.

They cite as main artistic influences such legends as Queen, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys. Asked to remark upon the themes explored on their new album, they write simply, “Focus on the positive, stand up for yourself, and hear life’s melody.”

Mad the Martian is a trio formed of brothers Robert and Jack Marsh, reunited with their longtime friend and producer extraordinaire, Anthony J. Resta (Duran Duran, Elton John, Collective Soul et al). They are an animated band with a TV program in development, and have been playing together since the mid- 1990s. Their style is based on alt- rock songwriting anchored on classic rock sensibilities, their signature sound marked by impeccably fine taste and an absolute refusal of digital instrumentation.

Speaking of this decision, Mad the Martian write, “We are coming to earth to fight against auto-tune abuse and laptop uniformity. [We're creating] a fresh, new rock ‘n’ roll sound that still sounds classic, using instruments made before 1979. No digital synthesizers were used in the making of ‘Blast Off.’”

The “Mad the Martian” animated series has the debut record as its underlying plot. Appropriately, the widespread overuse of modern studio technology such as auto tune and synthetic instrumentation is one of its major themes. The story as related in their official bio reads:

“’Blast Off’ is an animated series about Mad the Martian, a wacky band from another solar system on an intersolar mission to stamp out the same auto-tune abuse that consumed pop music on their home planet, Sunev, 30 years prior, which derailed their music career.

In their ‘Time Machine,’ they come to Earth after Voyager 1 becomes trapped in their orbit having left Earth’s solar system. Aboard Voyager 1 they find the gold records [stored there by NASA] of Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys.

‘It sounds like us!’ they exclaim. ‘We must go to Earth – we will finally be rock stars there.’

But when they get to Earth, they find the same plastic, force-fed, auto-tuned-beyond-recognition music that killed their careers back home. They settle in LA and meet up with a legendary rock guitar player and a gruff, no-BS manager played by [name as-yet to be officially declared].” The rest is an ongoing war of which “Blast Off” represents the first battle, and over which Mad the Martian clearly stand victorious.

Their tone and timbre are brightly colored by their chosen instruments for the debut album, making the record sound fuller, deeper, and more complexly textured than perhaps any rock record published in the last ten years.

“We are all vintage gear collectors,” Mad the Martian writes, “lovers of all things analog, tape machines and synthesizers and pickups and amp cabs and heads. We constantly buy and sell and trade guitars from the 50’s and 60’s and 70’s. We can talk about pedals and amps and tubes for hours. People in the same room with us get a headache hearing all the model numbers and endless geeky details about the tones and sonic character in endless minutia.”

Mad the Martian’s new record has reputedly started strong in the media, the band having struck several non-exclusive deals for film and TV use.

“We will be bragging constantly here and through social media,” they said of this on their official website, “because we have to keep the ball rolling and make it happen to recoup our costs, and to do it all over again.”
