Whew! One more time at the Scottish Games and Festival. Here is my previous article – see link: http://forums.jazmaonline.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6727 // The date: April 27, 2014, Sunday.
Deanna Jaxine Christensen and Don Christensen once again worked the booth, selling Mrs. Morrison’s short bread. I wandered around to see who I could interview. I ran into Gerald ‘Jerry’ Whealen of Whealen Design who is Co-Chair of the Pipes and Drums. Very nice gentleman. I met a Falconer named Kate Marden of West Coast Falconry and she knows my employee Gina de la Rosa very well, she calls Gina – the Go-To Girl.

I met Robyn McBurney. She tells me that she is Scottish and Irish. She first started with this festival by being a guest participant. She was involved with the Caledonian Club, see here: http://www.caledonianclub.com/ She became a volunteer with pipes and drums. At one time she was referred to as a steward. Then she became the one in charge of stewards over the pipe and drums competition. She has been to Edinburgh, Scotland and stayed in Scotland for 3 days. She is going back to Scotland this Summer and is staying for 2 weeks. She is part of the Douglas Clan. She has always been attracted to the Scottish Culture. The Scottish Culture touched her heart and she fell in love with the bagpipes. She is now a Master Steward. She tells me about the games that they are playing at this festival, such as the Caber toss and the throwing of weights. See Caber toss: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caber_toss
She also tells me how the drum major competition originated via the Scottish military. She tells me that I have a lot to look forward to on this day. In the noon ceremonies, things get piped in by the lead band, then all of the clans march through. After the clans march, here comes the Scottish animals from Oxen, sheep and dogs with Scottish origins.

Today only spent $17.00 on French fries, onion rings and 2 cups of coffee, not bad. The only ‘bad’ incident I saw is a woman that was extremely drunk and saying she was god over and over again. She tries to swipe some Kettle corn off the bench table, then goes over to the Wicked Tinkers and throws beer on one of the band members and then takes a swipe at a woman at the Wicked Tinkers booth. Later she tries to tear down one of the Wicked Tinker’s t-shirts. Security came quickly and escorted her out, she had tears in her eyes.

The next person I interviewed was Aaron Shaw – bagpiper of the Wicked Tinkers. He tells me that he learned the bagpipes from a guy in Palo Alto, then went to Bagpipe Summer School. He has been to Scotland and went to the College of Piping. He tells me that it is indeed a tricky instrument. Aaron went to Scotland, when he was 16 years old. When he was introduced to the bagpipes, it fired him up and he knew he had to learn how to play them.

While walking around, came across Josh Brown – former HPI Paranormal Investigator. Cal-Fire made their presence known at this festival and all of the firemen wore kilts. I once belonged to Cal-Fire when it was known as the California Division of Forestry. I was a firefighter in Colfax, CA for one year. Thank you to Jim Strand for his shot of Jameson Irish whiskey. Another fun day and after watching an inebriated guest in the parking lot getting sick, it was time to finally head out. Deanna showing her appreciation that I came, took me to Shari’s Restaurant off Florin, where we dined on a Denver omelette, pancakes, chocolate milk, toss salad, chocolate creme pie, cherry pie. Thank you to this festival for giving us two free parking passes and 2 free passes for me, so I could get through the gate and interview everyone!
