A birthday auction

Today is my birthday. And I have a very special 8th edition of The Lost Words with its cover words lost to auction for the Graffeg campaign to place a copy of the Welsh edition in every school in Wales.

I’ve drawn inside a sleeping, peeping Red Fox and also the words of the Red Fox Spell, written by Robert Macfarlane, commissioned originally by the BBC for the Prom 49: The Lost Words.

Original, and signed, and I can dedicate it to whoever wins the auction.

And this is how the auction works. If you wish to bid comment on this blog post with the amount in pounds sterling. I will have to action all comments so your comment won’t appear straight away, be patient. I will try to keep on top of checking in, but sometimes comments overlap. When there have been 24 hours with no bids I will contact the last two commenting people to see if they wish to go higher. After 24 hours the auction will close and I will contact the highest bidder with the link for them to donate to.

The campaign is almost half way there. £13 will see one book into one school. If you could share this post and help us spread the word that would be wonderful. There are other rewards to be claimed so take a look at the crowdfunder page. I feel it is so important to support the growth of the Welsh language, though I know so little of it myself. Words that stick with me are words like ‘cadnor’ which is one of the Welsh words for fox. Our book has been translated/adapted into Welsh by Mererid Hopwood, and it is a joy to work with this amazing poet and multi-linguist. Both of us are struggling to cope with how our politicians seek to divide us at the moment. I love how Mererid moves between languages and explains to me the origins of words, the subtlety of translation.
