Israel is standing on the sidelines of the beginning of a second Cold War

Israel is one of the few countries that have good relations with Ukraine, Russia, and the US – it needs to decide where it stands.

The standoff between Russia and the West over Ukraine is the beginning of a variation of a second Cold War, and Israel is standing on the sidelines, according to Dr. Ofer Fridman, a senior lecturer in war studies at King’s College in London and an expert on Russian affairs.

“This is a second variation of the Cold War with three sides – Russia, China, and the United States,” he told The Jerusalem Post. “The question is how bad can it go?”

“[Former prime minister] David Ben-Gurion adopted the policy of non-alliance, and it was the Soviets who chose to support the Arabs,” Fridman said. “Because Ben-Gurion did not pick a side, the USSR chose a side for him. It’s on Israel now to make a choice, or not.”

“In our regional environment, the question is, Can we stay neutral?” he asked. “Do we want to stay neutral?”

Israel understands that its strongest ally remains the United States, but Russia is the key influencer in the Middle East, and Jerusalem speaks to Moscow to continue its war-between-wars campaign against Iran and Hezbollah in Syria.

Just recently, as if to send a reminder to Jerusalem, Russian fighter jets carried out a joint patrol with the Syrian Air Force over the Syrian Golan Heights. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has also chastised the intensity of Israeli airstrikes on Syria, which it claimed have sharply increased.

“Israel benefited significantly until now from what is happening between Russia and the US,” Fridman said. “How many other senior military officers can say that they were in Russia’s MOD on a Tuesday and then the Pentagon on Wednesday?”

Israel is one of the few countries to have good relations with Ukraine, Russia, and the US. It is also a major non-NATO member and has recently increased its working relationship with the alliance, holding military drills with member states and hosting visiting NATO vessels.

According to Fridman, Russia has been trying for the past 20 years to undermine NATO, which has continued to expand to the east.

“For Russians, this conflict started in 1991 when the West tore the Soviet Union apart,” he said. “To say it began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea is a very Western perspective.”

It is unlikely that Russia will invade Ukraine, Fridman said.

Putin “first and foremost, for the past 15 years, has been trying to… undermine NATO,” he said. “The question now is, What would crumble and undermine NATO more efficiently and faster? A limited military or air operation to degrade military infrastructure or target NATO within Ukraine, or maintaining troops along the border?”

Jerusalem also tries to balance its relationship with Moscow by not selling weapons and other military equipment to former Soviet republics such as Georgia and Ukraine.

For example, in September, Kyiv expressed interest in procuring the Iron Dome missile-defense system as part of the American 2022 defense bill following a visit by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In June, the Ukrainian city of Mariupol also said it was interested in purchasing the Iron Dome system from Israel to protect its airport.

“The Ukrainian border with Russia is not the border with Gaza,” Fridman said. “It’s 400 kilometers long. There will need to be multiple times the number of systems available to deploy along the border just to protect it unless you decide to focus on the protection of certain infrastructure or facilities, like nuclear power plants or military deployment, not along the border.”

Even if Ukraine did want to purchase the Iron Dome and had the required funds, “it would require an unprecedented deal,” he said.

A possible second Cold War, which is playing out not only in the Middle East but across Eastern Europe and Asia, will need Israel to continue to walk a very thin tightrope if it wants to retain its military edge in the region.

If not, Israel’s freedom of operation could be at risk on its most volatile fronts.

The only thing worse than hundreds of fish washing up on the beach is hundreds of fish washing ashore on several beaches around the world at the same time.

 

And that is what happened last week, raising concerns that Hosea’s end-of-day vision of a wildlife apocalypse might be kicking in.

MEXICO: DEAD CUTLASSFISH

Hundreds of dead fish washed up dead on Palmares Beach in the city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico twelve days ago. The breed of fish, the large head hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), also known as cutlassfish, are elongated in shape with a thin pointed tail (they lack a fishtail in the usual form). The eyes are large, and the largemouth contains long pointed fang-like teeth. They grow to about 13 pounds and while most are only 2-3 feet long, some have been known to grow to over seven and a half feet in length. 

At least 200 of the fish were found washed up onto the shore. Local fishermen indicated that it is not common to see this species near the beach, since they normally live in the deep ocean at around 130-1,500 feet. 

Authorities are now analyzing the cause of their mysterious death.

HOKKAIDO: FROZEN SARDINES

A few hundred dead fish may not seem alarming but it was repeated just a few days later and on the other side of the world. TV Asahi, located in Tokyo, reported that one week ago, dead sardines began washing up on the beaches of Wakkanai City, Hokkaido. The die-off was attributed to the abnormally cold weather. Though the cold-snap was unfortunate for the sardines, it allowed the locals to collect the fish before they spoiled. Authorities were less enthusiastic, expressing concern that an unknown disease may have been the cause of the fish’s death. Last year, Hokkaido was the scene of a “red tide”, a harmful algal bloom occurring along coastal regions that results from large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms. It is believed that the algae drifted down from Russia, causing wholesale deaths of salmon and sea urchins, resulting in damages totaling $67 million to the local fishing industry. 

ITALY: HEAVY SNOW AND DEAD SEABREAM

In a similar occurrence, thousands of dead seabream appeared five days ago in the Richo Lagoon of Drepano Lake in north-western Greece after a heavy snowstorm blanketed the entire country.“They died from thermal shock,” said local Ichthyologist Konstantinos Perdikaris from the Department of Fisheries, who visited the lagoon on Tuesday.

The Seabream species are sensitive to low temperatures and cannot survive below four degrees celsius, said Perdikaris. Usual temperatures in the lagoon at this time of year are about seven to eight degrees celsius, he said.

The fishes were at a shallow depth where the cold was quicker to penetrate the water. The fish belonged to a local state-owned fish farm, and due to their containment in an enclosure in the lagoon they could not swim out to the deeper depths of the lake or sea to survive, said Perdikaris.

An estimated 50 tons of fish died in the incident. 

DEAD FISH BRINGING MESSIAH?

Massive die-offs of fish are prophesied to accompany the end-of-days.

Rabbi Shaul Judelman, former director of the Ecology Beit Midrash, a religious study group focused on the environment as it is treated in classical Jewish sources, noted that ecological endeavors are clearly an element in the Final redemption.

“The sea used to be teeming with life,” Rabbi Judelman said. “It was a given in the Bible that heaven and Earth would always exist. But when the prophets describe the end of life in the sea, it was the ultimate, an inconceivable level for people to imagine.”

“אחרית הימים (acharit hayamim; literally the end of days) can also be translated as the end of the oceans,” Rabbi Judelman pointed out.

“Nature is described as praising God and Man was set to guard over it. Our relationship with nature was initiated by Hashem (God) and how we relate to nature is an expression of how we relate to Hashem. Nature is God’s aspect of Judgment as related by God’s name of Elohim with which he created the world. At the end of days, when we are judged, we will be judged in this name, the name of nature. Some envision the end of days as armageddon and catastrophic. But according to Jewish tradition, there is another possibility that we can bring the Redemption in Achishena, through the sweetening of the judgment. Part of this can definitely be expressed through nature.”

“The environment is our divinely mandated responsibility. As such, harsh judgments can cause natural catastrophes. But in times of drought, we are told to pray but we are also told to engage in acts of charity. Nature is an extension of our relationship with God.”

Britain considering major NATO deployment amid Ukraine crisis

LONDON - Britain is considering making a major NATO deployment as part of a plan to strengthen Europe’s borders in response to Russia massing troops on the border with Ukraine, the government said on Saturday.

Britain has said that any Russian incursion into Ukraine would be met with swift sanctions and would be devastating for both sides.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to visit the region next week, and also will speak to Vladimir Putin by phone.

Johnson is considering the biggest possible offer to members of the NATO defence pact in the Nordics and Baltics, which would double troop numbers and send defensive weapons to Estonia, his office said.

“This package would send a clear message to the Kremlin – we will not tolerate their destabilising activity, and we will always stand with our NATO allies in the face of Russian hostility,” Johnson said in a statement.

“I have ordered our Armed Forces to prepare to deploy across Europe next week, ensuring we are able to support our NATO allies.”

Officials will finalise the details of the offer in Brussels next week, with ministers discussing the military options on Monday.

Stepping up diplomatic efforts after facing criticism for not doing enough, Johnson will make a second trip to meet NATO counterparts early next month, his office said.

Britain’s foreign and defense ministers will also both go to Moscow for talks with their Russian counterparts in the coming days, with the aim of improving relations and de-escalating tensions.

As Ukraine tensions grow, Sweden shows its military strength on strategic Baltic island

As they pull away, armoured combat vehicles and battle tanks roar up to a ridge and begin firing off shell after shell before racing in for closer range combat, supported by an infantry platoon armed with anti-tank mortar weapons.

Until Sweden’s armed forces sent reinforcements to the highly strategic island two weeks ago, this show of strength would have been impossible.

But with Russian troops on the boarder of Ukraine, the security situation in the Baltic Sea is tenser than at any time since 1981, when Russian warships came close to entering Swedish territorial waters to rescue a stranded submarine.

At the same time, Russia’s demand that the US block Sweden and Finland from membership of NATO has reawakened debate in Sweden over joining the alliance.

When Russia moved landing ships from its Arctic ports into the Baltic two weeks ago, Sweden reacted by dispatching tanks and combat vehicles to the island in a show of force.

Most of the tanks are from the Skaraborgs Regiment, located north of Gothenburg. Most of the combat vehicles have come from  Boden, on the edge of Arctic Lapland. The mechanised mortar team is from the Life Guard Regiment in Stockholm, and the jets have flown all the way from Lulea, at the northern tip of the Baltic.

“Now we have all these resources in place, it’s important for us to do this exercise to make sure that we have the capability intended,” says Major General Jonas Wikman, the Deputy Commander of Sweden’s Joint Forces Command, who has come in from Stockholm.

As well as testing different regiments’ ability to work together, the exercise is designed to send a signal to Russia that this Baltic island is defended.

“We are doing a lot of things that are not visible, that is not known,” Wikman continues. “This is something that is visible. It’s important that everybody knows that we have the capability and the will.”

Gotland, a diamond-shaped chunk of land a little smaller than Kent that lies between the coasts of Sweden and Latvia, has long been the key to the Eastern Baltic.

In an underground fort at the island’s military museum, there is a display of British ships’ crockery dating back to the Crimean War, when the British and French used the northern harbour to shelter the fleet which blockaded the Baltic and starved Russia of imports.

The island was, even in 1808, occupied by  Russia – albeit for only a few weeks – and Russian military plans obtained by Sweden during the Cold War made it clear it was a target.

Mike Winnerstig, the head of security policy at the Swedish Defence Research Agency, says that when his agency wargames conflict the person playing Russia very often takes Gotland as a first move.

“If you really want to disturb transportation of troops and reinforcements to the Baltic States, having Gotland as a platform for your long-distance missiles and anti-aircraft artillery is a very good thing,” he explains.

Mr. Winnerstig said that, by remaining outside NATO, Sweden was missing out on a powerful block to a Russian attack on the island.

“If they want to do something before there is a full-scale war between Nato and Russia, as we’re not part of Nato they could treat us as they treat Ukraine right now,” he said. “And Nato might say ‘we will support you, of course, tell the Russians that they’re evil, that we won’t come to your help militarily’. Then Gotland would be up for grabs.”

Until quite recently, Sweden made sure that the island was defended. At the height of the Cold War, Mr. Winnerstig explains, 50,000 troops could be on the island in a matter of hours, backed by 36 tanks.

The coastline and its harbours were defended by 25 fortified fixed artillery units, and the entrances to the harbours were filled with mines that could explode under incoming ships at the touch of a button.

Rutger Bandholtz, who commanded a battery of three 120mm Bofors cannons guarding Slite, the island’s eastern harbour, remembers the last time the island saw tensions similar to those of today.

A Soviet U-boat ran aground outside Sweden’s biggest naval base in Karlskrona in 1981, and Sweden feared the Soviet Union would send in warships to rescue it.

“That was the only time we had live ammunition in our cannons,” Bandholtz remembers, as he shows me one of the Bofors guns at the museum. “The prime minister said ‘keep the border’, and we did. They didn’t cross it, because they realised our guns were loaded.”

In 2005, the Gotland regiment was shut down, due, Mr Winnerstig snorts, to “the end of the Cold War, the eternal peace and the end of history”.  

The coastal defences are all gone. The armed forces even sold off the submarine harbour on the north coast to a local businessman, only to buy it back in 2018 after it was first nearly sold to a Russian oligarch and then sold to a Hong Kong businesman.

The demilitarisation was reversed following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 but, four years after the Gotland Regiment was reestablished, it still numbers only 300 personnel.

“It’s quite easy to close down a military establishment and military capabilities. It takes quite a long time to rebuild it,” explains Mattias Ardin, the Gotland Regiment’s commanding officer. “We started almost from scratch and we have had to rebuild all the buildings, and you can’t take a lot of people in when you don’t have anywhere to train them.”

But he says that, in recent weeks, Sweden has demonstrated that it can reinforce the island, with infantry patrols and tanks highly visible presence on the streets.

“There’s been a significant strengthening of Gotland, and we have seen some of those capabilities here today,” he says.

On the cobbled medieval streets of the island’s capital, Visby, few seem concerned about seeing soldiers and tanks.

“I’ve got no worries about it actually, at all,” says Isabel Bengtsson, as she makes her way to work. “We almost took away all our defenses 10 years ago. With the worries that we see in Europe, I think it’s good we have got them back.”

Lukas Rosengren, the commander of one of the CV90 combat vehicles from Boden, says his unit has been so busy patrolling over the past fortnight that there has been no time for socialising.

“There’s been a lot of communication through work and not so much outside because we haven’t had any spare time yet,” he says as he stands to attention outside his vehicle after the exercise.

With Joe Biden, the US president, continuing to warn of a “distinct possibility” Russia “MAY” invade, he could be on alert for some time to come.

Tensions between Russia and the West have surged, with Moscow massing tens of thousands of troops near its border with Ukraine. Russia has continued to slap down fears it will attack its neighbour, but Western powers have threatened President Putin’s country with crippling economic sanctions if an invasion does take place. UK Government sources have suggested Britain could deploy hundreds of troops to defend Europe if Russia invades Ukraine, and it is understood units from the Army, Royal Navy and RAF are all under consideration to be dispatched.

Britain already has some 850 troops stationed in Estonia and around 150 in Poland as part of NATO missions. The UK has also sent anti-tank weapons to Ukraine and offered military training to its forces.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “If Russia invades Ukraine, we would look to contribute to any new NATO deployments to protect our allies in Europe.”

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned Russia would face “severe sanctions” in the event of an invasion of Ukraine, and also did not rule out the UK supporting personal sanctions against Mr Putin.

Nile Gardiner, a foreign policy analyst and former aide to Margaret Thatcher, praised Britain’s “robust” response towards Russia and that it hasn’t gone unnoticed in Washington.

He claimed the UK “forms a stronger adversary to the Russians after Brexit”.

Mr. Gardiner told Express.co.uk: “The biggest opponent for Putin is Brexit Britain.

“The British have been far more robust than any European country in standing up to the Russians.

“The UK Government deserves a lot of credit for their stance.

“There are many here in Washington admiring what the British are doing with Russia.

“British leadership matters, Britain is a far stronger power outside the EU and forms a stronger adversary to the Russians after Brexit.”

The UK’s Foreign Secretary Ms. Truss has taken a firm stance against a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.

When asked earlier this week if Britain would support personal sanctions against Mr. Putin, she told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme: “We have ruled nothing out in terms of sanctions.

“In fact, we’ll be legislating to toughen up our sanctions regime and make sure we are fully able to hit both individuals and companies, and banks, in Russia in the event of an incursion.

“What’s important is that all of our allies do the same because it’s by collective action, by showing Vladimir Putin we’re united, that we will help deter a Russian incursion.”

During an interview with Sky News, Ms. Truss warned Russia would face “severe sanctions” in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.

She said: “We are urging Russia to desist from an incursion and we’re making it very clear that if they were to do that there would be a severe economic cost to Russia – severe sanctions.”

When asked for more detail on possible sanctions, the Foreign Secretary replied: “They would target individuals.

“They would target financial institutions and they would be coordinated with all of our allies across Europe, the United States, and others.”

Applies to the Jehovah’s Witnesses AND the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The LDS are currently attempting to construct a 3rd Temple, as it is THEIR belief that it is their destiny to achieve this. However, the Temple has ALREADY been constructed. AND is NOT of this earth see: John 18:36Yeshua said to him, “My Kingdom is not from this world; if my Kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting that I would not have been delivered up to the Judeans, but now my Kingdom is not from here.” So rather than waste time and money building THEIR 3rd Temple, which incidentally, we KNOW is in Jerusalem. Which “IF” one knows in Zechariah/Revelation in the Bible, and as much as it pains me to type this purely because of the suffering the people of Jerusalem will have to endure. People say that 2000 years ago he didn’t need money. When in all reality, there are reports in the bible that he was a carpenter until he started his ministry when he turned 30. So yes, he did need money.

The truth is, Satan has made modern-day society dependent on it for most. So that people are slaves to the system. Some people very, very highly regard money as their God. They are only motivated by greed and material things. And Satans biggest tool is the TV and media advertising, which forces the weak to want more and more. There was a study in cinemas in the ’50s in the USA where they would flash up on the screens for a fraction of a second: “Drink more coke, and eat more popcorn” and sales went up approx 75% in the foyers.

The Tavistock Institute in London has been responsible for the mind control of humans for some time now. Although the image they portray of themselves to the public is quite the opposite. So what I am trying to explain is that hu-mans, automatically assume that having lots of money will bring them joy and happiness. When this is simply not true. Haggai 2:8 states: Mine is the silver and mine is the gold, says LORD JEHOVAH of Hosts. This is true, Almighty God WILL have the Gold and silver before the script plays out. In fact, all silver and gold will be thrown into the streets by people as they will soon understand that they should have paid tribute to the Lord: See Ezekiel 7:19 They shall throw their silver into the streets and their gold. Their silver shall be despised and their gold cannot save them in the day of the anger of LORD Yahweh. Their souls will not be satisfied and they shall not fill their bellies. This suffering is the reward of their evils… But and it is a BIG BUT. Money soon will have no intrinsic value to anyone. So whilst it still has value to humans. One can show one’s loyalty, honour, and respect to Christ by tithing. Tithing to the Lord is biblical. You can find it in several places in the old testament. In Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Yes, it goes back before Christ’s existence. And “IF” you accept Christ RayEl as your Lord and King. It is only rightful that one tithe. The day will soon come when ALL will realize “we cannot eat money.”… And also keep in mind Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, “It is written: ‘A man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ “
