Looking From Both Sides Now

It occurred to me while filling out my most recent juror qualification form, perhaps question #6 is a PERCEPTION on my part.  What if I am certifiably crazy  but I only think I am a sane person?

Do we really see ourselves as we are?  Are our opinions of ourselves or the world around us anything close to being accurate?

This week I have noticed on a number of occasions that perhaps, my point of view might be….OK…more than might…strikingly different than those around me.

For example:  I think it’s still cold.  I realize it is Spring.  The calendar tells us it’s Spring and  everywhere I look people around me are wearing their sleeveless tops and shorts.  I guess because the sun is finally out and it is APRIL, it is time to think “warm”.  I, on the other hand, am thinking 42 degrees Fahrenheit is cold.

Crabby’s perception is that summer duds are in order.

Thought Number One:  Perception

As far as the questionnaire goes…. I perceive myself to by intelligent…dare I say “I am a rational person” ??? OK, maybe that is a stretch.  I have, served on juries before and helped determine verdicts.  There is the outside chance that those cases were easy and  they could of been “no brainer” cases.  On the outside chance, I am delusional, maybe I would of still made a good decision.  Face it…there is a 50/50 chance of getting it right. 

But…that leads me to the whole idea of how people perceive things.

 Clearly, many people are at odds these days on how they perceive any situation.   No one seems to agree with anyone else on anything and don’t all  of those people think they are right? Don’t most of us think that our opinion is based in truth and logic.

 If you were the sort of person to decide to do something outrageous today, would you recognize the fact that you are being illogical…or maybe even  a lunatic.  Just last night at the local AMC theatre here, a man decided to stand up during the movie and urinate on the seats.  The other movie goers seemed to think this was a “bad” thing.  Did the guy peeing on the seats, not perceive this to be out of line?

While it’s highly unlikely, what if I am the voice of reason?

Not everything, of course, is black and white. Some times there isn’t a clear  right or wrong way of looking at a subject.   Never the less, in most instances there seems to be a lot of expert advice being thrown around by those that deem their viewpoint is the “correct way” of looking at things. From their lofty perception of “rightness” they reasonably concur that the other guy is an idiot. 

Thought Number Two: Would we change our opinions if we could imagine ourselves from the perspective of the other person? (or non-person, as the case may be)

Everyone has opinions based on their  perceptions.  Your viewpoint is dependent on if you are the thrower of the   imaginary ball or the dog trying to make sense of it.
