Time Capsule Opened After 100 Years [+Photos]
Officials and church members gathered in the Furst Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City to unbury a time capsule that was buried a century ago.
The 6-foot long, 3-foot wide chest contained a range of items including:
-An antique telephone from 1891
-A pair of shiny leather shoes selling for $5 when buried
-A map of Oklahoma City
-Sealed letters from people back then to people now
“What a remarkable insight the people of this church had at the time to be able to put all thse different things into this wonderful treasure chest,” said Gov. Mary fallin, according to the Oklahoma Gazette.
Karen Rogers, a church member, compared the smartphone in her hand to the vintage one from the chest.
The people gathered heard the news of the day the chest was buried, as several newspapers were selected from the chest and read aloud.
A woman named Virginia Sohlberg came up with the idea for the chest. Her granddaughter, Virginia Eason Weinmann, spkoe at the event.
All the items will be put on exhibit at the Oklahoma History Center.
