Top 10 Weirdest Sculptures around the World

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Art is meant to make a statement and break boundaries. The most famous pieces of art in history challenge how we see and think about the definition of art.

While not all of these pieces do that exactly, the sculptures on this list are some of the weirdest in the world. But how weird can a sculpture really be?

Read on to find out more about the top 10 most unique sculptures.

Mustangs at Las Colinas (Texas, USA)

The first of the sculptures on this list is the “Mustangs at Las Colinas”. These massive bronze statues depict a pack of horses galloping majestically across a stream.

These horses have attracted visitors from around the world for their beauty and weirdness. The fountains built into their feet help paint the scene, capturing the still image of the horses mid-dash.

Located at the center of Williams Square, the “Mustangs at Las Colinas” are a must-see for locals and tourists.

People of the River (Singapore)

The Singapore River is an important piece for the city-state. The “People of the River” captures a snapshot of a simpler time. These sculptures are scattered along the edge of the river, offering brief sneak peaks into the past.

“People of the River” is one of the most famous sculptures because of how animated each piece is. The statues act as a very accurate depiction of what life was like years and years ago. They are so lively and natural as if they’re simply frozen in time.

Les Voyaugers (Mersailles, France)

The next sculpture on the list is “Les Voyaugers” in Mersailles, France. Whether you appreciate them for their artistry or their striking appearance, these weird sculptures are a must-see for tourists.

They depict seemingly normal people going about their business, but with pieces of their bodies missing. Their floating fragments are not only striking, but they’re also quite creepy.

“Les Voyaugers” are like art molds that haunt the city. While you can try to make your own molds from stores like this website, they probably won’t look as ominous as these.

Non-Violence (New York, USA)

“Non-Violence” has become one of the most famous sculptures in the world. Also known simply as the “Knotted Gun,” this sculpture is considered a symbol of peace.

It was crafted in the 1980s by Carl Fredrik Reutersward following John Lennon’s death. It was later donated to the United Nations, elevating it to become a symbol for peace.

While the one in New York is the most famous of the sculptures, there are 16 others scattered across the world. Each one is visited for its striking shape and meaning.

The Black Ghost to Klaipeda (Lithuania)

“The Black Ghost” is one of the more terrifying sculptures that can be found around the world.

It commemorates an ancient folktale from the 16th century. The statue is a life-like depiction of a mysterious hooded figure sprawled out on the docks. Not only is the sculpture terrifying, but its posture is almost too real.

“The Black Ghost” can be found in Klaipeda, the oldest city in Lithuania. As impressive as the work of art may be, it also resembles a nightmare come to life.

Man Hanging Out (Prague, Czech Republic)

“Man Hanging Out” is a humorous depiction of Sigmund Freud dangling from above. The statue is a favorite among tourists and locals alike.

The piece was crafted by David Cerny, whose work is well-known for being controversial yet intriguing. “Many Hanging Out” is no exception. This particular statue helped Cerny make his climb to fame as one of the best in the world.

“Man Hanging Out” is an impressive work that makes you double-take whilst walking down the street. The location, as well as the way the man hangs, is so outrageous that it almost feels like a scene from a cartoon.

Monument to the Unknown Official (Reykjavik, Iceland)

“Monument to the Unknown Official” is such an unusual piece of art because it’s difficult to even understand what you’re looking at.

To the average onlooker, it just appears to be a block of stone with legs. But the sculpture has its own satirical meaning beneath it.

The piece is meant to serve as an homage to the average bureaucrat. While other countries have statues honoring unknown soldiers, this one offers thanks to those that don’t hear it enough.

As weird as it may be, the “Monument to the Unknown Official” is a mystifying sculpture that you can’t help but look at.

Shoes on the Danube (Budapest, Hungary)

One of the eeriest sculptures in the world is the “Shoes on the Danube.”

This sculpture commemorates the Hungarian Jews that were executed in World War II. The Jewish people in this area were ordered to remove their shoes before being shot so that their bodies would fall into the water.

The dozens of bronze shoes scattered beside the river represent the shoes that were left behind. As haunting as they are, the “Shoes on the Danube” are a wonderful piece of unusual art.

Maman (London, UK)

“Maman” is a towering spider sculpture that looms over the London crowds. The massive spider is stretching over 30 feet high and nearly 33 feet wide.

The sculpture is made of a combination of stainless steel, bronze, and marble. Between these metals and the marble, this sculpture is likely one of the heaviest out there. Though “Maman” is owned by the Tate Museum in London, the giant spider has been traveling the world since 1999.

Charles La Trobe Statue (Melbourne, Australia)

While most of the Charles La Trobe statue is normal, there is still something different about it. This artwork is flipped completely upside down.

It can be found outside of La Trobe University. According to the artist Charles Robb, the piece is meant to illustrate how universities are meant to turn ideas on their heads.
